The Virginia Cavaliers will hit the road and travel to Blacksburg, Va. on Wednesday, April 10th to face the Virginia Tech Hokies at 3:00 p.m. in their next outing before returning home to host the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in a three-game ACC series on April 12-14 in Charlottesville, Va. UVa will meet WFU on Friday, Apri 12th at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, April 13th at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, April 14th at 1:00 p.m. All three contests will be played at the UVa Baseball Stadium.

VIRGINIA WINS FOURTH WEEKEND SERIES THIS SEASON: With its two victories over Maryland (March 5-7), Virginia won its fourth weekend series of the year and improves to 4-3 in weekend series decisions. The Cavaliers have won their series with Bucknell (3-0), Seton Hall (3-0), Duke (3-0) and Maryland (2-1). UVa lost its series with Florida State (1-2), North Carolina (1-2) and UNC-Charlotte (0-3). Through seven weekend series, Virginia's record is 13-8 overall in weekend series contests.

TWO RECORDS WITH ONE STONE: Virginia outfielder David Stone has set two school records this season after becoming UVa's all-time leader in walks and stolen bases. He set the UVa record for most walks in a career on March 15, 2002 after bypassing Bill Narleski's (1984-87) mark of 125 with his 126th walk against Florida State, and he tied Narleski's mark of 72 career stolen bases on April 7th against Maryland. Stone currently has 137 bases on balls and 72 stolen bases, both are career high figures for a Cavalier.

STONE NEEDS JUST ONE STOLEN BASES TO SET UVA RECORD: With two stolen bases in Virginia's 8-7 victory over Maryland on April 7th, David Stone tied Bill Narleski (1984-87) for first place all-time at UVa for stolen bases in a career. Stone, currently tied for first in the category with 72 stolen bases heading into the Cavaliers' game with Virginia Tech on April 10, needs just one stolen base to set a new school record.

FEAR THE TURTLE?: The Cavaliers won two of three games in Virginia's three-game weekend series against the Maryland Terrapins (March 5-7) in College Park, Md. UVa won the first game 5-0 before falling 10-3 in the second game. However, the Cavaliers claimed an 8-7 victory in the final contest to win the series two games to one.

KAMRATH PITCHES VIRGINIA'S FIRST NINE INNING COMPLETE GAME SHUTOUT THIS YEAR: After going nine complete innings and allowing no runs on just four hits, Virginia's Jeff Kamrath became the first Cavalier this season to pitch a nine inning complete game shutout. Kamrath's performance marked the first time a Cavalier accomplished the feat since Brandon Creswell's 9.0 inning complete game shutout performance against the #3 Miami Hurricanes on April 27, 2001 in Coral Gables, Florida.

JMU WINS HOME-&-HOME SERIES WITH UVA: With its 3-2 and 13-4 victories over UVa on April 1st and 2nd, JMU won the home-and-home series against Virginia. The two wins marked the sixth consecutive time the Dukes defeated the Cavaliers in baseball.

UVA TAKES ONE OF THREE AGAINST UNC: After dropping the first two games of its three-game series against the North Carolina Tar Heels (15-4 & 5-0), Virginia won the final game of the series by the score of 8-3. UNC, ranked #24 at the time, was the second ranked opponent the Cavaliers knocked off this season. On March 15th, UVa defeated the then #1 ranked Florida State Seminoles by the score of 11-10. Both victories came at the UVa Baseball Stadium.

VIRGINIA PLAYS ITS FIRST EVER HOME NIGHT GAME: On March 29th, 2002, Virginia played its first ever night game at home under the newly added lights at the sparkling new UVa Baseball Stadium. Aside from playing at night for the first time at home, the Cavaliers were greeted by nearly 1,600 spectators (1,594 total) who packed into the new facility to see Virginia face the North Carolina Tar Heels. The 1,594 fans on hand were a season high and one of the largest crowds ever to see a home UVa baseball game.

CAVALIERS SWEEP ACC ROAD SERIES FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 12 YEARS: Virginia swept an ACC series on the road for the first time in 12 years after beating the Duke Blue Devils in Durham, N.C. on March 22-24 by the scores of 6-4, 8-3 and 9-5. The last time UVa swept an ACC series on the road, it was against the Maryland Terrapins in College Park, Maryland on April 27-28, 1990. The series with Maryland consisted of only two games.

VIRGINIA'S GAME WITH JMU RESCHEDULED: Virginia baseball game scheduled against the James Madison Dukes for Wednesday, March 20th was cancelled due to inclement weather conditions in the Charlottesville area. The contest was rescheduled for Monday, April 1st at 3:00 p.m.

VIRGINIA UPSETS #1 RANKED FLORIDA STATE: Virginia recorded a dramatic 11-10 come-from-behind victory over the #1 ranked Florida State Seminoles in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams. UVa's Kyle Werman's two out RBI-single to right-center field with the score tied 10-10 in the bottom of the ninth inning proved to be the game-winning hit as he drove in Chris Sweet to score the game-winning run.

DAVID STONE BREAKS UVA'S ALL-TIME BASES ON BALLS RECORD: With his walk in the top of the fourth inning in Virginia's 11-10 victory over #1 Florida State on March 15th, the Cavaliers' David Stone walked to become UVa's all-time leader in bases on balls with 126, breaking former record holder Bill Narleski's mark of 125 bases on balls from 1984-1987.

VIRGINIA CRUSHES NORTH CAROLINA A&T: In Virginia's 25-1 victory over North Carolina A&T, the Cavaliers' 25 runs marked the first time Virginia scored more than 20 runs since posting 21 against Seton Hall on March 3, 1996, and UVa's 20 hits were the most hits gathered by UVa in a single game since the Cavaliers recorded 21 against Maryland back on April 21, 2001.

ROB NEWTON RECORDS UVA'S FIRST GRAND SLAM OF THE SEASON: Although he might be one of the last guys on the team you would expect to do it, Rob Newton made his first career home run in a Cavalier uniform count - it was a grand slam! He hit it in UVa's 25-1 victory over North Carolina A&T on March 11th at War Memorial Stadium. Newton's grand slam was the first for Virginia this season and marked the first time a Cavalier hit a grand slam since Jon Benick accomplished the feat back on April 29, 2001 against the #3 Miami Hurricanes in Coral Gables, Florida at Mark Light Stadium.

CHARLOTTE SWEEPS VIRGINIA IN WEEKEND SERIES: Charlotte dealt Virginia three consecutive losses after UVa dropped a three-game weekend series to the 49ers on March 9-10. Virginia lost 4-1 and 6-5 in a doubleheader on March 9th before suffering a 21-11 setback on March 10th.

UVA HITS FIVE HOME RUNS IN A GAME FOR THE SECOND TIME THIS SEASON: In Virginia's 12-4 victory over Old Dominion and 18-3 win over Seton Hall, UVa hit five home runs as a team in both contests. Against ODU, Dan Street hit three home runs and David Stone and Andrew Riesenfeld each added one. Against SHU, Dan Street hit two home runs and Matt Street, Chris Sweet and Miguel Luina each hit one.

DAN STREET HAS SECOND MULTIPLE HOME RUN GAME: For the second time this season, Dan Street had a multiple home run game. In Virginia's 12-4 win over Old Dominion, D. Street became the first player known in UVa baseball history to hit three home runs in a single game. In Virginia's 18-3 win over Seton Hall (3/3), he hit two more home runs to give him five on the season as of March 3rd.

STREETS PAVE THE WAY TO VICTORY: The last name Street is becoming commonly known around the UVa baseball program. Fourth-year Dan Street is one of Virginia's top players, but his younger brother Matt is also making a name for himself following right behind in his brother's footsteps. In Virginia's 18-3 victory over Seton Hall (3/3), M. Street finished a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with four RBI, three runs scored and a home run. D. Street didn't have a bad day either, going 3-for-6 with five RBI, two runs scored and two home runs.

CAVALIERS SWEEP PIRATES IN CONVINCING FASHION: Virginia swept its second three-game series with a 3-0 wash over Seton Hall (March 2-3). UVa defeated SHU 2-0, 18-3 and 5-1 en route to outscoring the Pirates 25-4 in the weekend series.

RIESENFELD & WORD COME UP WITH TIMELY HITS: Teammates Andrew Riesenfeld and Robert Word came up with the game-winning hits in two of Virginia's three wins over Seton Hall. On 3/2, Riesenfeld hit a two-run, RBI-double to give UVa a 2-0 shutout win over SHU on March 2nd. The following day in game two of a doubleheader, Word recorded the eventual game-winning hit with a two-run home run in the Cavaliers' 5-1 victory.

GALE PITCHES COMPLETE GAME SHUTOUT: Second-year starting RHP Chris Gale recorded UVa's first complete game shutout (seven innings) after going the distance on the mound in Virginia's 2-0 shutout over Seton Hall (3/2). Gale allowed no runs on seven hits to post the win.

VIRGINIA FINISHES FEBRUARY WITH WINNING RECORD: With UVa's 5-3 come-from-behind victory over William & Mary (2/27), Virginia finished the month of February with a winning record of 6-2. The Cavaliers were 3-1 at home, 2-0 on the road and 1-1 on a neutral playing field.

VCU HANDS UVA ITS FIRST HOME LOSS: The Cavaliers suffered their first home loss of the 2002 season after the Virginia Commonwealth Rams defeated Virginia 13-7 at the UVa Baseball Stadium.

DAN STREET BELTS HIS WAY INTO UVA RECORD BOOKS: In Virginia's 12-4 victory over Old Dominion in the first game of the Berkeley Electric Cooperative Challenge, Dan Street became the first player known in UVa baseball history to hit three home runs in a single game and to record seven RBI's in a single contest. Street finished 3-for-5 at the plate with seven RBI and three runs scored after hitting two, three-run home runs and adding a solo home run later in the game.

CAVALIERS FINISH 2-1 IN CHARLESTON: Virginia finished 2-1 in the 2002 Berkeley Electric Cooperative Challenge in Charleston, S.C. as part of The Citadel's weekend tournament. UVa defeated Old Dominion by the score of 12-4 in its first contest before suffering its first loss of the season when Western Carolina handed Virginia a 4-3 defeat. The Cavaliers responded with a 5-4 victory in their next outing by defeating the host team, The Citadel.

VIRGINIA SWEEPS BUCKNELL IN SEASON-OPENING SERIES: UVa started off on the right foot as the Cavaliers kicked off their 2002 season-opening series with a three-game sweep over the Bucknell Bison. Virginia defeated Bucknell 10-3, 7-5 and 8-0 en route to its 3-0 start on the season.

BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME: Virginia, playing for the first time in the new UVa Baseball Stadium, attracted a great crowd for the season-opening doubleheader against Bucknell on February 16th. UVa had 620 spectators on hand for the first contest, followed by 806 spectators for the second game of the doubleheader. Both figures surpassed the season-high total for any home game last year (2000) at Virginia. UVa's season-high attendance for a home contest last year was 533.

Womack's Coaching Numbers Keep Rising: On March 11th, 2000, Dennis Womack coached in his 1,000th career game as a head coach when Virginia faced Eastern Michigan. Four days later (March 15), Womack earned his 500th career victory as a head coach when Virginia defeated Princeton by the score of 5-2. Although the win was just another victory to Womack, the victory marked yet another one of his many great accomplishments as head coach of the Virginia baseball program. Womack's overall coaching record now stands at 558-563-7 through 1128 games.

Virginia Tabbed In 2002 ACC Baseball Coaches Preseason Poll: The University of Virginia baseball team was picked to finish eighth in the 2002 Atlantic Coast Conference Coaches' Preseason Poll. UVa finished 25-31 overall, 9-15 in the conference last season. The ACC's nine head coaches selected Clemson as the top pick to win the conference championship in 2002 with five first place votes and 77 total points. The Tigers return seven position players and three starting pitchers from their 2001 squad that finished second in the ACC regular season standings and compiled an overall record of 41-22.

Following Clemson, Florida State was picked to finished a close second with 74 points and four first place votes after finishing the 2001 season as the regular season champion. 2001 ACC Tournament Champion Wake Forest finished in third place tallying 57 points. The Demon Deacons finished last season with a 44-18 overall record.

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets claimed the fourth place slot with 56 points, while North Carolina placed fifth in the balloting with 45 points. The Tar Heels were followed by N.C. State in sixth who finished with 33 points and then Duke was selected seventh with 29 points. Virginia was picked to finish eighth in the ACC with 24 points and Maryland in ninth place with nine points.
