A few months ago, I updated my thinkpad with Fedora Core 3. I don't have the exact kernel version on me, so I'll have to get it when I get home tonight.

I just figured that while GTS is updating the whole site he can add that to his list.

Also I started a new job a month ago, so now I'm writing in Cobol and RPG on the good ol' reliable IBM AS/400. I suppose that might be good for a laugh. If anyone ever needs any Cobol programming conversation... uh yeah. lol

I've switched to Gentoo 2005.1, kernel = 2.6.14-gentoo-r2.

Here's my kernel.

2.6.9-1.667 Fedora Core 3.

Part of me wants to try a Gentoo install, and part of me doesn't want to dedicate a ton of time. I understand all the advantages of using Gentoo, and I certainly think it is worth. Practically, how long does a first time install take?

Well you seem to have an advantage I didn't in that you may know more than just the bare minimum about Linux.

A guess:
base install - ~2-3 hrs. ( just do what the docs say and it's a breeze)

GUI install (X.org and KDE for me) took about 12 hours for me, but I installed the full KDE-meta package to save myself some drama.

All the extra goodies took another 12 or so hours.

Luckily, though, you're not in front of the comp the whole time things are building. I slept while KDE was emerging, and was at work while the extra goodies were doing their thing.

You should get some file somewhere named "fedora-release"
# cat /etc/pathto/fedora-release

Post what it says. Trying to discover the Fedora code name for that release (example: FC2 = Tettnang)

I'm moving on to Mandriva. After beating on my Knoppix/Debian hdd install trying to upgrade things like Firefox & Java, I figure it's time to start fresh. I'm thinking/hoping I'll be able to do a decent job at package handling with this purportedly user-friendly distro (Mandriva 2006-Free). I ordered ready-made CD's from an Ebay-er but they wouldn't install for reasons unknown. I then tried downloading & burning my own and lo & behold they installed, except there's some issue with ATI Radeon video card support and I was getting a blank screen on bootup. So I had to reconfigure using Vesa instead and now I have KDE up and running...

BTW, if anyone sees a good deal on a basic-home-use 17 or 19 inch LCD monitor, let me know...this 15" CRT has gotta go !

ATI has horrible Linux support I'm afraid.

ATI is the largest graphics company in the world -- about 20% larger than nVidia.

nVidia has over 400 full time Linux employees.
ATI has fewer than 75.

Guess who fields the quality driver for Linux....

And they are quality... I played Doom III for Linux on a GeForce 5200 FX ... managed about 25 to 30 fps (although I did overclock the hell outta the card :D )

BTW Zippy -- do a "uname -r" on command line to get your kernel version. Reply with it and I'll update you on the LUG page.
