CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Ex-Clemson football star Travis Zachery was sentenced to probation and fined $250 after pleading guilty to marijuana distribution Thursday.
Circuit Court Judge John Few suspended Zachery's four-month prison sentence and said the ex-player could end his two years' probation early if he pays the fine and gets his degree.
On Dec. 4, Zachery, 25, and former Clemson offensive lineman Akil Smith were arrested and then kicked off the team by Clemson coach Tommy Bowden.
Smith pleaded guilty in March to several counts of distributing marijuana near a school.
Zachery's attorney, Chris Olson, said his client was set up and betrayed by Smith. Olson said Smith was facing arrest when he agreed to cooperate with police in a drug sting.
Zachery holds Clemson's all-time record with 50 touchdowns and is second all-time in rushing yards with 3,058.

His sentence could have been a whole lot worse. I like the fact that the judge is using getting his degree as a lure.
