All I can say is holy crap! And, oh yeah...LMAO!!!
The Minnestoa Twins never have had an
easier game.
Luis Rivas and Jacque Jones each had four hits and five RBI as the
Twins posted the largest win in franchise history, a 23-2 rout of the
Cleveland Indians.
Minnesota's previous biggest win was a 21-2 thrashing of Boston on
May 24, 1994. The Twins set a new club record for hits (25) and fell
one run shy of matching the franchise record.
The Indians matched their most lopsided loss in history. Cleveland's biggest loss was 21-0 to
Detroit on September 15, 1901.
"As fun as that was, I had to sit there and make sure no one got hurt," Twins manager Ron
Gardenhire said. "It was a game I didn't even have to manage and I was scared to death. The
linescore tells you everything. We were hitting the ball on the nose, even the choppers were
falling in. Everything we swung at was good."
Dustan Mohr and A.J. Pierzynski also had four hits for the Twins, who tied an American League
record with four players getting four hits. Milwaukee was the last team to have four players get
four hits in a game, accomplishing the feat on August 28, 1992 against Toronto.
Mohr, Pierzynski and Rivas -- the bottom three hitters in the order -- went a combined
12-for-18 with 12 runs scored and eight RBI.
Minnesota scored in every inning except the third and eighth, including pushing across 10 runs
in the seventh.
Activated from the disabled list earlier in the day after missing 55 games with a broken bone in
his left wrist, Rivas also matched Hall of Famer Paul Molitor's club record with five runs scored.
"I'm proud of Rivas to come back like that," Twins outfielder Torii Hunter said. "We're all happy
for him but tomorrow is a new day and I hope some of this carries over."
Twins starter Rick Reed (6-2) was the beneficiary of all the offense, allowing two runs and three
hits in seven innings.
"It's nice to see this," Reed said. "I've been on the other end before and I can't speak for
them. It was just one of those days, I've been there."
Absorbing a pummeling like this is nothing new for the Indians, who were beaten, 21-2 by
Anaheim earlier this season. Cleveland became the first team since San Diego in 1969 to lose
two games in the same season by at least 19 runs.
"When they got it going, there wasn't much we could do," Indians manager Charlie Manuel
said. "It seems like here, when we don't make the plays defensively, it beats us. They got runs
early and then just started hitting."
Cleveland starter Ryan Drese (5-4) was roughed up for five runs and seven hits in three
innings.
Charles Nagy and Mark Wohlers struggled for Cleveland, combining to surrender 14 runs and
13 hits in 2 1/3 innings.
The Twins started their barrage in the opening inning as Torii Hunter delivered an RBI single.
In the second, Rivas delivered a run-scoring single and scored on a wild pitch later in the
inning, making it 3-0.
Jim Thome hit his first of two homers in the third for Cleveland. He also homered in the
seventh, giving him 17 homers on the season.
After scoring twice in the fourth, the Twins pushed across four more runs in the fifth. Mohr
slugged a two-run homer, Jones stroked an RBI double and Corey Koskie plated a run with a
groundout, extending the lead to 9-1.
Rivas doubled in two runs in the sixth and Jones and Cristian Guzman plated runs later in the
inning with groundouts.
In the seventh, the Twins sent 14 batters to the plate and banged out nine hits en route to
their biggest inning in 42 years of existence. Jones highlighted the inning with a three-run
homer.
