... for snakebitten OU baseball team's continued bad luck.
The Sooners were swept over the weekend by Texas Tech there. OU is now in the basement in the Big XII baseball standings and risks not being in the upcoming conference tournament in Arlington, Texas next month.
Of course, injuries have played a part, especially among the pitchers. Roberts was seriously hurt in Sunday's game at Texas Tech (I remember hearing James Hale say they rushed him to a hospital and have him on blood thinners to keep it from clotting) -- hopefully he'll be okay. Rocky Cherry and Austin Mix have had injury problems too (although Mix is throwing again. Sadly he's been a little bit snakebit too).
As I recall listening to Amy Lawrence's show this afternoon, the caller said it was time for Cochell to go and get some new, young blood in there. OU won the CWS in 1994. Now all of a sudden that's a very long time ago.
Much like in professional baseball, if the team doesn't win, its the manager that takes the fall (ask Davey Lopes, for instance, how this works, or perhaps Johnny Oates, or Davey Johnson, all major league managers fired from their teams anywhere from a year or two to a week ago).
So, should OU consider letting Larry Cochell go after all this time -- and after winning a CWS?
Things could probably be worse, at which time I pose a rhetorical question:
Is it better to be humiliated in small chunks over time, or have it all in one big awful event and get it over with?
Take the Maryland baseball team, for example. A couple of weeks ago the Terrapin Nine were clobbered by Wake Forest by a score of 35-0. That is not a typo. They went to a baseball game and a football game broke out.
So which alternative would you want?
