RALEIGH, North Carolina (Ticker) - The Carolina Hurricanes
continued retooling their goaltending position Friday, acquiring
Martin Gerber from the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.
Two days after trading away veteran Arturs Irbe to Columbus, the
Hurricanes picked up Gerber for defenseman Tomas Malec and a
third-round selection in next week's draft.
More changes could be made. Carolina has until July 1 to make
last year's starter, Kevin Weekes, a qualifying offer.
Gerber was 11-12-4 with a 2.26 goals-against average and a .918
save percentage in 32 games with the Mighty Ducks last season as
a backup to Jean-Sebastien Giguere.
The 30-year-old Gerber led all NHL goaltenders in GAA (1.77) and
save percentage (.936) for the 2003 calendar year, the best
record in those two categories in a calendar year since Dominik
Hasek recorded a 1.76 GAA and .943 save percentage in 1998.
A native of Langnau, Switzerland, Gerber allowed two or fewer
goals in 23 of his 32 regular-season appearances for Anaheim
last season, including each of his final seven outings of the
2003-04. He is 17-23-7 with a GAA of 2.13 and a .923 save
percentage in 54 career NHL games with the Mighty Ducks.
Malec played in 43 career NHL games with Carolina since being
acquired on January 16, 2002. He appeared in two games with
the Hurricanes without registering a point last season.
The Mighty Ducks now have four selections in the first three
rounds of next week's draft

Wow, we've got DesRoches and Cam Ward in the Minors, Weekes and Storr in the pros. Now we've got another #2 goalie. I wonder if they're trying to deal Storr? But what we need is not more goaltending, but offense and maybe one or two other blueliners.
