According to the arrest report, filed by the city police department at 9:11 a.m. today, Scott has been charged with one misdemeanor count of assault of a female individual.
The alleged incident reportedly took place at 159 1/2 E. Franklin Street in Chapel Hill at 1:38 a.m. this morning. That address is the location of the Players dance club.

"The athletic director and I are aware of the situation," head coach Matt Doherty said in a statement this afternoon. "I have spoken to Melvin and he has told me a different version of the events. We take this seriously and will look into the matter completely. We will continue to monitor the situation as it proceeds through proper legal channels."

The complainant reported the incident this morning and Scott was brought in for photos and fingerprints. According to the arrest report, the alleged assault involved "personal weapons (hands, feet)" and that the "suspect struck victim and left the scene."

The bond was a written promise, with no monetary amount attached. He will appear in court, though there a trial date will not be available until tomorrow.

Scott, a Baltimore, Md. native, averaged 6.2 points and 2.0 assists, appearing in all 28 games last season

Let's hope it's not true. I'll take Melvin's word for it until something official comes out of this.

I won't pass judgment until I find out more about this -- but, it sounds like a very unfortunate incident. I hope Melvin is telling the truth....

He should not have been there in the first place. Having said that, it sounds like simple assault. He should keep his hands to himself, but everyone has been in a situation similar to his. Lets hope it all plays out well. If he did do something he should be punished for, punish him IMHO.

This was a post from someone on the IC board that interested me greatly:
quote:
The incident is not fully reported. The individual female slap Jawad Williams, try to hit Manuel due to the fact she was intoxicated and was screaming something at scott. then scott bowed his ear close to her ear to hear what she was saying, then she punch him. Scott just react by slapping her back with quick reaction.

I guess the main thing here is that we have no clue what happened. Maybe this person's version is true. Maybe it's not.

I'm not trying to defend Melvin with this, because I don't know what happened. If he was actually the instigator here and if he stepped beyond his bounds, then that is inexcusable.

But, if the girl has some fault in this too, then that changes everything (especially if she hit Melvin and/or instigated the incident).

Let's wait and see....

I'd believe that story.

The poster is a friend of Melvin's from Baltimore - runs a site called DChoops or something - it is on the rivals network I think.

He has had several names on IC over the past year and would report inside info, he mainly got laughed at because of his lack of English skills. I discredited him a bit too at first.

Turns out he was genuine. He was at the Blue & White game, sat behind Felton with some of his buddies. We tried to figure out if he wa s arecruit, then Clint came (knew him from some events) and started talking to him and he set us straight.

Basically he is in Scott's inner circle though.

Thanks for the info, altmin.

Now, I'm interested to see how this all shakes out. If anything, this should teach our guys to be more careful when they step into potential trouble.

I agree, Players should be more careful who they let in. They could lose their licenses.

I remember another incident in the spring of 2000

it was the night before the UVA game I think (nt sure if it was road or home)

we ended up losing and I found out later in the DTH office ( I worked for them at the time) that Capel, Cota and some others on the team were out at players till close, then went to some other party.I remembered thinking, those guys should've been resting up.

oh well

next day we got whupped or something

I agree with pretty much all of that, Rammer.

Where was Jonathan Holmes to step in and take control of the situation?

Players is a 21 and over club. Neither Jawad nor Melvin are 21. They should not have been inside. Players (according to NC law) is breaking the law, they should receive a fine and heavy scrutiny. If Melvin and Jawad showed fake IDs they were also breaking the law just by entering. They deserve a fine. I find it hard to believe that the doorman at Players did not know them. If he was ignorant of their true ages, that is no excuse.

Players should take some heat over this. Athletes should be banned by the coaching staff from entering these establishments.

This is coming from a bartender of 19 years experience. I have to obey these same (arcane) laws and so should Players.

I hope everyone else did as well. There's no excuse for something like this to happen to any of these guys again.
