Ok, I got a question for everyone that should stir up some debate. I go to the University of Georgia. What UGA used to do was have a "points system" for people to get into the school. I am not sure exactly how it went but I am sure it was SAT+GPA,ext..

Awhile back, they awarded blacks EXTRA points so they could try to intensify diversity on campus. Right now there is 1.9% black males. They wanted that number out. But the courts ruled that UGA COULDN'T DO IT after a little while because it unfairly put white kids out of UGA for reasons they couldn't help so they scratched that idea.

Should colleges (such as what Michigan is going through) do this?

My personaly opinion? I think it's a joke. I know kids in Atlanta that have enough trouble getting in with 3.2's and 1100 into Georgia. If they want to keep raising the standards at UGA, they should pick the BEST kids, regardless of race...

Affirmative Action by race is a bad idea. I believe there should be some type of affirmative action, but more by the kids who truly give a good effort and attend an extremely poor school, that doesn't get good resources or teachers. Give those kids a little boost in getting a solid education. Doesn't matter what race they are. I can't give you a detailed outline of how this would go about, its just an idea that's circulated in my mind.

So only black kids are poor? I see what you are saying about AA by race, but it's a bad idea to deny someone that works hard because you have to fill a quota. Inner-City schools are a joke, and not everyone is cut out for college. The Conservative plan is vouchers. IMO, this is an excellent idea as it WILL primarily help the inner-city kids that attend sub-standard schools due to many sociological factors, Ie. no family support, the teacher's union, etc. Kids who DO want to learn shouldn't have to be subjected to little gangbangers that don't give a damn about education and idolize people like Sug Knight. IMO, these gangbangers should be expelled from the schools but the people running the schools don't have the balls.

I don't believe in quota systems or AA. We should start when their young.

....and by the way, it matters not one bit how much money you throw at a school. South Fulton County (Atlanta) spends about 4 times as much as, say, Lakeside High School in my county, Columbia County next to Augusta. We have some of the highest SAT scores in the state. S. Fulton has some of the lowest and some of the highest dropout rates. In Richmond County (Augusta), there are two magnet schools, Davison Fine Arts and AR Johnson. They are about the best in that state and color doesn't matter. It takes dedication to get accepted into these public schools and the graduates are some of the smartest in the state. There are also many inner-city kids there, actually a LOT. Education and intelligence isn't color-specific, so long as we start when their young.

I didn't say only black kids are poor. I was referring to whoever fell into the category that does give an effort but isn't provided with the greatest education (no matter what race they are).

Vouchers have good intent and they work with whoever gets them, but that doesn't help the rest of the kids that are still stuck in those schools.

Privatization of public schools, which is what they're trying in Philadelphia I believe, has worked pretty well last time I heard. But you can't privatize every single bad school, which leaves us at the same original problem of poor schools.

And I know throwing money at schools doesn't work, I've paid attention to the state of DC schools, and what they've tried. More money usually just equals wasted money around these parts.

Speaking of affirmative action....looks like the Supreme Court struck down the Michigan point system (thats good) but still allowed the University by a 5-4 vote to keep some sort of program that takes race into factor when considering applicants. The usually conservative O'Connor sided with the more liberal justices on that vote.

State schools should be representative of the racial makeup of the state. I know that it might not be realistic given the educational divide between graduating white and black students to make 30% of UGAs student body black. At the very least though, there should be a "critical mass" of diversity at the school of at least 10%. If less diverse than this, it will have an adverse affect on the schools reputation.

Your taking the most qualified in general, your just making a slight exception to the underserved. If a school is not diverse enough it will harm its perception.

There should not be extra points on a quota system given on skin color. Whatever way you can try to excuse it, that's reverse racism, plain and simple.

I don't think that any school should be segregated. Diversity enriches any school. The problem I have is the way they reach that. I say fair is fair...take the top students regardless of race, gender, etc. If that ends up 95% white, so be it. If it ends up 95% black, so be it as well.

The problem with a lot of liberals, especially in this state, is that they think any student who graduates HS should go to any college they want. Lots of liberals in AR are mad because of the UA's rule requiring a 3.0 GPA in HS to be admissible, along with ACT and SAT limits. I say hell, make it a 3.2 at LEAST.

College is not a right, it is a privilege. The students who performed the best deserve the rewards..no matter who they are, and for anyone to claim a system where the students with the best scores getting admitted, no matter who they are, as unfair, has NO logical argument.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who believes this. I once was in a discussion about admissions standards, etc. and was called elitist because of my stance. Go figure.
