in 2008, everything points to Rudy getting the GOP nomination. Will anybody be able to stop him should he run? He will be a Republican with a strong showing in the northeast.... that's hard to overcome. Not to mention his perception as being "America's Mayor"

The question is, can a Republican that supports abortion rights get the nomination? You can bet that Christian conservatives will turn out in droves to make sure that doesn't happen.

That's not the problem...it's if they stay home in Nov.

I agree w/ GTS that Rudy would be the leader now BUT

It's primarily by default b/c no one else is being groomed.

AND

Four years is a long way away.

Depends on who is President. If Kerry is President, the Republicans will nominate anyone that they feel can get him out of office. If Bush wins the next nominee will be more right of center in the party.

Im not sure that Rudy has what it takes to be Prez. Recently, his popularity in NYC has plummetted, and Bloomberg isn't as popular either, more recently due to the rush to build that ugly building on the WTC site. Rudy has become unpopular due to recent 9-11 scandals. Also if history teaches us anything, its rare that we have a president who breaks the mold of English-Scotch-Irish and Protestant. Hitlary isn't the answer to Rudy either, primarily because, and not to sound sexist, but many would make sure that she or any other female wouldn't break the mold of the most exclusive men's club on earth. IMO its hard to see who is being groomed for 2008, but I think a lot is weighing on this election.

I find it increasingly strange that so few women have even *contended* for the presidency.

Women are starting to win governorships. This is the current list:

Janet Napolitano of Arizona (D)
Ruth Ann Minner of Delaware (D)
Linda Lingle of Hawaii ®
Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas (D)
Kathleen Babineaux Blanco of Louisiana (D)
Jennifer Granholm of Michigan (D)
Judy Martz of Montana ®
Sila M. Calderon of Puerto Rico (Popular Democrat)
Olene S. Walker of Utah ®

People looking for a woman to win the presidency should probably look closely at that pool (Calderon excepted, of course). It is much easier to win from a governor's mansion than it is from the Senate.

Granholm strikes me as the obvious star of this bunch. But she is Canadian by birth, and ineligible for the presidency.

Anyone know much about Napolitano or Sebelius? Both are Democrats in traditionally Republican states -- a good combination for someone eyeing the White House, or even just a vice-presidency.

I know many, many people assume Hilliary Clinton will run for president in '08 (in the event of a Bush re-election).

Maybe she will. But I don't think she's The One.

I wasn't referring to Rudy in the general election. You've got to get the nomination first and to do that in the Republican party, you've got to get the Christian conservatives behind you. At least as it currently stands, I just can't see the Republicans ever nominating a pro-choice candidate.

Jeb is actually interesting to listen to, compared to his sibling.

I think Jeb is smarter than his brother, but it doesn't change the fact that he has been ripping Florida apart at its seams. Hes an awful governor!
