I've noticed Wal-Mart has their own issue ads on TV now. Apparently they are feeling the heat.

One ad claims they do wonders for the communities, i.e. selling low-priced stuff that even their own employees can afford, using the lay-away system, of course!

Really? Haven't seen those issue ads but yeah, when a company starts running a PR campaign, you know something has gone awry.

The really sad thing is I shop there. When I was deep into Wendell Berry-dom, I quit shopping there but I've gotten back in the habit. I used to be a James Food Center advocate to the core.

Then they razed the JFC.

Of course, I tried the other corporate giant in town (Schnucks) and they were substantially higher for a week's worth of stuff. Maybe Kroger is the answer. Or the indie grocery Albert's.

I just think it's brutal that my poverty forces me to patronize places I hate. But, ya gotta love capitalism!

There was one person who said "Wal-Mart has done more for the lower class [working poor to you and me] than any other company in the history of this country."

Do you think he was being "ironical"?

I've found Wal-Mart to be cheaper by about a dollar on every grocery item. Where I live now, the nearest one is not a supercenter, so I have no reason to go. The nearest supercenter is in Madison and I ain't going up there to shop. I shop at Winn Dixie now. I find Kroger to be outrageous..

the last time I was in Wal-Mart, I was treated like crap by the few associates that I had to have contact with. I don't blame them, though. If I had to look forward to that everyday, then I'd be surly too!

Something is definitely rotten in Bentonville! Wouldn't you love it if a story ran claiming that they've cooked the books like Enron and Worldcom and were really bankrupt. That'd be great.

It never ceases to amaze me how people have the impression that this life was ever intended to be anything other than a trial and a test unto death. I cannot imagine why employees should think that their working life should be better than it really is, particularly in light of the fact that it is really better here than elsewhere. Mrs Parker shared with me a site that JBR and others of like mind should visit, Demotivators.com. This life is a long pull to death, my friends, and it will be easier on you if you accept this.

To borrow an observation from that site, all I can say is, "You are not being paid to follow your dreams. Get to work."

Yes, JBR, I shop there too, although I want to slap myself every time I do... And then one wants to slap half the "humanity" inside the place... or maybe cry for them... the pregnant teenagers and their boyfriends (husbands?) who look like deer caught in the headlights; the mama-in-sweatpants with three, count 'em, three kids, from rug rats to curtain-climbers to yard monkeys all in one cart (and one thinks, where is her husband? couldn't she have left some if not all of these at home?) to the home-permed matrons chatting in the aisles, blocking your approach to the Sam's Choice brand smoked almonds which your son loves and which cost half as much and are just as good as the Diamond brand... so what the hell is one to do?

Ideally, one buys organically grown almonds from the co-op and roasts them herself. In a wood stove?

In my "salad days" (God, what is wrong with me tonight) I used to do most of my shopping at the Rainbow Whole Foods Co-op, behind the Dutch Bar, you know, very close to the Triangle Mart naughty bookstore/peepshow place. :) I was so idealistic and naive (niave?) not to mention vegetarian (and childless) then. ... And ultimately I got financially screwed by this very co-op! Film at 11:00.

Got a call that someone would be coming tomorrow, not tonight. I just love predictability. It makes a person boring, I know, but there is so much to say for it anyway.

Despair is such an ugly approach to life, Wry.

Does your minister/priest know you feel this way? Yikes!

I didn't get booted off of http://www.iidb.org afterall!

They were down for a few days.

I thought I was booted because I kept responding to this potential suicide-boy. I told him that life is all suffering and he's constantly depressed because he's grasping at the false reality that life owes us something.

I told him to go on and kill himself, but he'd have to do so responsibly because it is quite irresponsible to committ suicide and not leave money and arrangements for disposal of your remains. I thought that got me booted, but apparently not.

The suicide boy and I have been going at it today. He says life does owe him something and I respond, "no fricken wonder you are depressed, idiot."

Did he work at Wal-Mart?

I don't really think life owes us anything but I do find it nice to wrest joy out of the stranglehold America has on misery's handmaiden.

What can I say? My Southern Baptist optimism always bubbles up at the least expected times. I'm always hoping and looking forward to the best possible outcome, even when the worst happens.

Sure helps me sleep better at night, anyway.
