Gullet sucks, the pitcher's never get any better. They never make adjustments during games. If they get roughed up early they don't learn from their mistakes. He was horrible, I am glad he is gone.
2 straight wins :D Here come the Reds

As I said, Gullett wasn't perfect. His track record wasn't great. But asking him to do much of anything with these pitchers is like asking Jeff Gordon to win the Daytona 500 with a beat up pickup truck.
That's all for me.
You don't have to argue it anymore, but don't mischaracterise my statements. I never blamed Gullett for all the Reds' problems. I admitted that I think middle management is more to blame than anyone. I only took exception to your argument that Gullett deserved absolutely no blame. Now you are saying that Gullett wasn't perfect, and his track record wasn't great. So was he at any level to blame or was he perfect?
Other teams have done a decent job building teams with an inferior payroll, it can be done. Also throwing money at the team, won't neccessarily solve the team's problems, as shown by the Yankees this year.
Yeah, it's a problem, but it's not the only problem.

Okay, I know I said I was done, but I will respond to this.
I never said you put all of the blame on Gullett. But you did say that he should take some of the blame, right?
My point all along was, and I apologize for not making it clearer, was that Gullett had his faults, but when you boil it all down, the good outweighed the bad with him. He made the Reds better, not worse, and so I don't think he should have been fired or should get any of the blame for the problems. But, you guys are the Reds fans. You know more about him than I do. I'm just giving my opinion.
I'm sorry if you thought I was mischaractarizing you.

OK, well Overall, I think Miley and Gullett were sacrificial lambs, but not innocent ones. The Reds need a good cleaning house at many levels.
They are still suffering from a gutted Minor League system (thanks Marge).
Middle Management makes nothing but reactionary decisions. The fans boo Danny Graves, he's gone. The fans call for Gullett's head on the radio, he's gone.
Lindner, the owner, is beginning to spend the money, but they didn't start spending until it was too late. They saw tickets sales were falling and threw a bunch of money at the situation to show the fans that they were doing something. Too late in the game, all the quality free agents were gone at that point.
Miley was from all accounts a good guy, but since he left, the team really hasn't cried too much about it. Adam Dunn was whinning more in the media about them taking his recliner out of the locker room than anybody did about Miley leaving. I didn't hear any of the pitchers complain about Gullett leaving. Everyone was pretty much, "that's business." Which leads to...
Overall apathy from the team. There are times it just looks like they don't care. There's really a lack of hustle accross the board. A few players come out and play hard, but not the whoel team. Lats I checked Cincinnati was ranked last in Fielding percentage. To me that says lack of hustle.
The Reds have a situation where it's going to take a few years to get back to respectability. They really need to rebuild the whole organization. The fans won't like it, but they can't have a fire sale everytime the fans start crying. It figures that as soon as the Bengals start looking half-way decent, the Reds start sucking it up.

Bad defense is a lack of concentration, not hustle. Lack of hustle means you don't get to the ball in the hole or the texas leaguer over short. It is all concentration and execution. It also applies to the poor hitting with runners in scoring position and the walks by the pitchers.
You are right in saying that we are a few years from accomplishing respectibility. We have a good core of position players, but they all do the same thing, HR or K (Griff, Dunn, Pena). We have Encarnacion coming up to play third for next year and he should form a great hitting left side of the infield with Lopez. I bet Casey will be traded at the deadline this year. T
he problem with the organization is that they don't scout players and they have a horrible medical staff. Basham, Howing, Ambroles, Gruler and many other pitchers have gone through major arm surgeries the past couple of years. It's time to dig deeper into other countries and find some good foreign players.
Professional sports in Cincinnati are pathetic.

Encarnacion has struck out 50 times (once every five ABs) so far this season, and has already committed 18 errors down in Louisville. Yet, he's still one of the Reds' top prospect, and probably the one most major league-ready. I think that alone says a lot about how bad a shape the farm system is in currently.

Encarnacion is called up to take Kelly's spot, while Kearns' left on the AAA roster for now. I wonder if something's in the works to deal Randa soon?
