Dec. 16, 2002
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State point guard Todd Galloway, who spearheaded the Seminoles' come-from-behind 56-47 victory over Birmingham Southern with a strong second-half performance, was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Week in voting conducted by a panel of ACC sportswriters. Galloway is only the eighth player in Florida State history to have earned the award since the 1991-92 season. The eight Florida State players have now earned the honor a total of 11 times.
Galloway (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame (Va.) Academy) scored 12 points on seven of eight made free throws (all in the second half) while handing a great deal of the guard duties during the final 20 minutes of the game. He played a career-high 29 minutes and was not charged with a single turnover (zero turnovers) while scoring 10 second half points including the go-ahead 3-pointer for Florida State in their only game of the week.
In playing his career-high of 29 minutes, Galloway played 17 minutes in the second half and was the Seminoles' second half scoring leader with 10 points. His field goal (a three-pointer) in the second half came with 10:14 remaining and put Florida State up to stay, 41-39. He scored five consecutive points for Florida State to bring the Seminoles from three down to two ahead (two free throws and 1 made 3-point shot) in the span of 1:19. Florida State went from down 36-39 to up 41-39 with the ball in Galloway's hands.
He then extended the Seminoles' lead to four with 3:45 remaining in the game with a made free throw after getting the ball for the Seminoles with a defensive rebound. Galloway then closed out the Panthers with two more made free throws with 1:18 remaining in the game.
Galloway is ranked fourth on the team in scoring with an 8.2 points per game average and has 13 assists and only seven turnovers in 128 total minutes played. He averages 21.3 minutes played per game.
