GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Thirteen players who earned first or second team All-Conference honors this past season also secured spots on the 2002 Atlantic Coast Conference All-Academic football team as announced by Commissioner John Swofford. To be eligible, a player must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the fall semester or have maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
Heading up the 33-member All-Academic team is Virginia quarterback Matt Schaub, the 2002 ACC Player of the Year, and five players who earned All-America recognition this past season - Florida State's Brett Williams, Maryland's Todd Wike, Steve Suter and Madieu Williams and NC State's Chris Colmer. Other first or second team All-ACC selections named were Maryland's Nick Novak, Duke's Shawn Johnson, Georgia Tech's Jeremy Muyres and Luke Manget, Maryland's Brooks Barnard, Duke's Alex Wade and Florida State's Michael Boulware.
Georgia Tech's Dan Dyke, a four-time Verizon Academic All-American and a four-time All-ACC Academic team selection, heads up a list of eight players that are repeaters from last year's All-Academic team. Other repeaters from the 2001 team are Georgia Tech's Kelley Rhino, Duke's Chris Douglas and Shawn Johnson, Clemson's Khaleed Vaughn, Maryland's Todd Wike and Georgia Tech's Jeremy Muyres. Wike and Muyres were each named to the honors team for a third time.
