Great question at the end of the announcement of Doherty's forced resignation. Should Dickie Baddour not accept some responsibility? I was not very impressed with the way he hung Matt out to dry. I was also concerned with his stated willingness to go outside the "Carolina Family". Where did this guy come from again? Good luck Matt, I hope you have great success in whatever you do.

Today was a sad day in the annals of Carolina Basketball for a variety of reasons.

Unfortunately, the same malcontents that wanted Guthridge gone, Doherty gone and everything else will be turning on the new coach just as soon as something goes differently from they way they want it to. They'd better be careful, they might get what they deserve, the UCLA of the East for sure.

Matt, if you are out there reading this, please know you are and always will be part of the FAMILY. Please hold your head high. Today is a sad day, but now it is time to move forward. Let's evaluate the facts and make some thoughtful suggestions:
First, Baddour, you have no clue. Evidence, your statements about Phil Ford. Are ya'll drinking buddies?
Second, with the exception of Phil, who only cares about himself, listen to those in the family who HAVE a clue. The last time you hired a BB coach the advise you took from your ego was far more than that taken from the man that built and loves this program.
Third, make Dean the AD. Sorry, can't a person wish. But, honestly, let Dean assist in this hiring. Why? Refer to First, you have no clue.
Forth and last, we must hire a coach with plenty of experience, college or pro. A disciple of Dean Smith is a must, that way at least the players will play like sophs and jrs, not frosh and sophs. Afterall, Matt did coach the Smith system.

Lastly, let me say this. If Matt did do something to be fired then so be it, over, done, complete. To each former and current player that played for Matt, let me ask you this. Do you truely want to be a part of the Carolina family? I think the answer is honestly, yes. If so, don't you look past the faults of your family members? I bet not one of you have always agreed with your Mom, Dad, Brother, Sister, Cousin, Aunt, Uncle, or Grand Parent. When you didn't, did you say you wanted to leave the family? I don't think so. Well, Matt is a brother in this family. I think all of you could have given him more family guidance. Think of the many venues other than face to face. Maybe, you thought you were with your conversations with Phil, who by now everyone knows really erks me. If so please accept my apology. I am seriously disappointed in the Seniors from this years team. If any of you failed to consider ways to build, but demonstrated actions that destroy, then remember this. It will come back to find you. If your asperations include the heavily Carolina influenced NBA you, the spearhead of this will be found and marked. Remember, family does stick together.

My list of candidates Williams, Karl, Fogler. Not Bown, sanctions do matter Dickie. These players better hope MJ is not offered or takes the position. He blows pro players away, think of what he'd do to these teens. Williams might come, one because he will succeed, second, he will find out if these players want to be family.

Well, enough for now.

Still upset :frown:

I'm just afraid that this will kill recruiting for ANOTHER year and we'll be back to square one in a lot of respects. I'm a fan through and through. 8-20 or 20-8, Carolina will always be the greatest team in college basketball for me.
Still, doesn't this whole Doherty "resignation" just scare the living crap out of anyone besides me?
For what it's worth, I liked the guy a lot, especially this year. Let's hope this turns out for the best. Has Lebron James been offered the job yet? :D

just say, I think the logic of Larry Brown was 5-8 years of very high level coaching and recruiting; Brown's a proven winner. The big question was who would be first assistant, and many presumed it would be Phil Ford. There's no guarantee that would have been so, but if it was then probably Phil would have been the logical successor to LB. I believe Phil Ford could be an outstanding assistant, but that does not mean he would make a great head coach.

I have a problem with the Doherty dismissal only in that I don't know all the details of what happened within the program. In fact I don't think anyone does except the coaches and players who were there; we as fans may never know. I'd have to know a lot more before I would say that Baddour pulled the trigger too soon.

Question: Is Baddour so dimwitted that he thought Doherty could be fired during Final Four week, with his obvious #1 choice as a replacement still coaching in the Final Four, and not have it be a major distraction? If you answer "no" then his reasons for firing Coach D must have been pretty persuasive.

First of all Zinfanheel i like you're logic on this. The fact is as you stated nobody knows the details of the situation.I think most of us just wanted a better explanation for what happened.Secondly i can't answer you're question. How can any of us know for sure what he was thinking. All i know is that Matt was and still is and will allways be a member of the heel family. This is what brothers and sisters do in any family when a sibling is under attack.Don't misunderstand where im coming from.Lets be happy this whole thing is over with.

Amen to that. And I'll say this about Phil Ford: I hope we give him a chance before someone else does. :)

RE: Post-Doherty
I want Roy Williams. His first year he should clean up Doherty's mess and get us back in the NCAA's. His second year, he should be National Champ. His 3rd, despite losing 6 McDonald All America underclassmen to the NBA, he will field a Top 10 team with frosh/scrubs/walk-ons. His 4th and 5th years we will be back on top in the ratings where we belong. Blowing a huge lead at Georgetown will cost the Heels in '07, but in 08 they'll be champs once more.
