Lucy and her fellow Wake fans will like this one! I know Lucy is already talking about Mauk.

From ESPN.COM: The buzz from Wake Forest camp is that QB recruit Ben Mauk has star potential. Teammates rave about his accuracy and anyone who watched the Big 33 prep all-star game between Ohio and Pennsylvania, saw the Ohio star's mobility. Coach Jim Grobe, who was tight with Mauk family from his days coaching at Ohio, would love to redshirt him, but don't count on it.

"We have a rule," says Grobe, "the best players play."

:D I love every new tidbit of info on this great student-athlete!

Grobe reiterates that point at every speech..."the best players will play". At the Atlanta WFU Days dinner in June, he was asked about Mauk, Jon Abbate from Kennesaw, GA, and a couple other freshmen. Grobe stated that if all things are equal between upperclassmen & freshmen, then the upperclassmen will play and the freshmen will redshirt. However, if a freshman shows himself to be the better player at that position, then Grobe will be sure that the freshman plays.

I like this philosophy & Grobe believes that he will end up getting the best out of his players by having all of them compete to fill each position.

Thanks for the quote, rocketfootball!!

That's kind of an odd last name...anyone know if he's the brother of LSU starting QB Matt Mauk?

Even though Grobe said the best players will play I still think Mauk should be red-shirted because this is going to be a little bit of a rebuilding year I think.

Early on in practice, it certainly sounds like Cory Randolph & Zac Taylor will be our 2 QBs, and Mauk & Bruce Hall will redshirt:

<a href='http://www.journalnow.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=WSJ%2FMGArticle%2FWSJ_BasicArticle&c=MGArticle&cid=1031770435476&path=!sports&s=1037645509200' target='_blank'>From Winston-Salem Journal - 8/11/03</a>

Quote:Both Mauk and Hall said yesterday that they would probably rather redshirt this season and preserve a season of eligibility.

Mauk is a stocky 6-1, 205-pound freshman who set national records with 6,540 passing yards and 76 touchdowns his senior season while playing for his father, Coach Mike Mauk, at Kenton High School in Ohio.

'They haven't decided yet - I think they're going to decide on Wednesday,' Mauk said yesterday. 'But if I have to redshirt, I think that's one of the better decisions for me right now - just to get a full year in this offense and not waste a season on a few games.'

Hall is a 6-0, 185 freshman who completed 357 of 650 passes for 5,646 yards and 34 touchdowns during his career at Milton High School in Milton, Fla. Grobe said he was impressed that Hall was confident enough to sign with Wake Forest, even after Mauk had already cast his lot with the Deacons.

'If the opportunity comes to play, I'd love to play,' Hall said. 'But this year, I think, it would probably be best for me to sit back and learn.'

Grobe has said that his policy has always been that his best players play. Five practices into the 2003 season, Randolph is clearly the Deacons' best quarterback.

'I think a lot depends on Cory,' Grobe said. 'If Cory stays healthy, we will probably redshirt both of those kids. If Cory were to get banged up, we would probably have to let one of those two freshmen compete with Zac Taylor.

WOO HOO! Can't think of a better way to hit post #2000 than to be talking about WFU football!! :D
