Quote:Rix, FSU pull out of deep hole in the fourth quarter

By Jack Corcoran
DEMOCRAT STAFF WRITER

All those questions about Florida State's offense that appeared to vanish through the opening two games of the season came back to the surface in Saturday's 14-13 victory over Georgia Tech.

Chris Rix? The rebuilt offensive line? Those unproven receivers? The play-calling? All were suspect at times as the Seminoles narrowly avoided the upset in front of 82,133 at Doak Campbell Stadium.

Rix was handcuffed early by the play selection but struggled when first given the chance to air it out in the second half. He was intercepted twice but rallied FSU in the fourth quarter. He scored on a 3-yard run with 7:09 remaining and hit P.K. Sam in the back of the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown with 2:57 to play.

"I know I could have done a lot of things better," said Rix, who completed 15 of 30 passes for 160 yards. "Thankfully, at the end I was able to at least give my guys a chance to make plays."

Rix was on his way to hearing the type of criticism that dogged him in 2001 and 2002.

Attempting to find Craphonso Thorpe in the end zone on third-and-goal early in the fourth quarter, Rix was intercepted by cornerback Reuben Houston.

Houston returned the interception 47 yards before Greg Jones brought him down. Two plays later, Georgia Tech went up 13-0 on a 47-yard touchdown run by P.J. Daniels.

"We all got off to a rough start, and the defense held us through. And that's what a team is all about," Sam said. "Rix just hung in there. We told him. 'We're behind him. We're behind him.' He just came through and made the plays."

FSU was credited with one first down in the first half. The Seminoles finished with 251 yards.

With few holes to run, Jones was held to 13 yards on 14 carries. He had been averaging 6.7 yards per carry.

Thorpe fumbled on FSU's first play from scrimmage, losing possession on a reverse that gained 16 yards. He couldn't come down with a touchdown catch late in the third quarter. Rix's 30-yard pass was on the mark, but Thorpe, who was defended by Houston in the end zone, let the pass go through his hands.

"We weren't able to get in a rhythm," Rix said of FSU's early problems. "They were playing very good defense, trying to bracket everything. They were definitely shutting the run down. By the time we realized we had to pass, it was nearing halftime."

The Seminoles, ranked 10th in the Associated Press poll, averaged 36 points and 490 yards in victories over North Carolina and Maryland to open the season.

The Yellow Jackets have been pesky the past five seasons. The Seminoles had to overcome an outstanding performance from Joe Hamilton to come away with a 41-35 victory in 1999, remaining undefeated in their run to the national title. Cornerback Stanford Samuels was the hero in FSU's past two trips to Atlanta.

Samuels sealed a 26-21 win in 2000 with a controversial pass breakup and came up with an interception in the end zone in the final minute to cement a 21-13 triumph last season.

Just like in 2001, FSU trailed going into halftime on Saturday at Doak Campbell Stadium. The Seminoles erased a three-point deficit and went on to a 28-17 triumph two years ago.

Yeah I still remember 2000 and the no-call pass inteference at the end of the game.
At least in this game they were calling penalities on both teams.

I'll give y'all something to think about...

This team NOW BELIEVE'S IN RIX!

Last year ala Notre Dame...the team quit.

Not this year.

For as much as Tech shut us down. We outgained
them. Our Defense is "Big Time for Real!

We had 1 first down in the first half.

Tech had 2 in the second Half.

We've become a team again.

A team with a bevy of playmakers...especially
when we get them all healthy again.

We won a game...That maybe we shouldn't have won.

Who on our schedule the rest of the way, plays
defense like Tech and Maryland?

Colorado...
Duke
Miami...(Folks they were soft in the middle last year
and they're still soft in the middle)
UVA...(Close)
Wake...
N Dame (haha haha)
Clemson (Furman got 17 and MTSU got 14)
NC State
Florida (Against 1AA's)

As for our defense. 3 games and one TD given up!

Let's wait for the Colorado game...and worry about this
one game at a time...but, if our D continues like it
has...we can win 'em all...

I will hold my verdict on FSU's defense until after the Miami game. Tech, Maryland, and NC aren't exactly offensive jugarnauts.

Now if you guys can hold Miami to 2 touchdowns or less, then I think you may run the table with your defense as your frontline.

So, don't jump on me because I do think you guys have a very good defense. Defense is what builds champions.

I still don't think Rix is all that great. But I have been spoiled by great FSU QB's in the past. If he continues to mature he will improve.

Yeah, Miami will be a BIG test for the Noles. They do have a decent offense, but seem to be lacking a defense. We all shall see....

I'm also curious about this week's game with Colorado. They (Colorado) lost their starting QB with a shoulder injury in last week's lost to Washington State. I don't know a whole lot about CU, but hope to read up on them this week.

The Power of Defensive Football.

When Bobby Bowden was trying to hire Mickey
Andrews as his Def Cord. Mickey told him of
some needs and why.

Mickey told Bowden. I want some of those
top notch skill people on the Defense.

Then he told Bowden why...

When Andrew's was Charlie Pell's DC @ UF, they
always thought FSU's problem was...they put
their best athletes on Offense. A Good Defense
can neutralize a Good Offense.

Andrews continued...that it was better to have
a Great Defense and a Great Offense...rather
than a Super Offense and a Good Defense.

Case in Point. Noles travel to UNC.

Match-up billed as #1 Def in Country (UNC)
vs #1 Off in Country (FSU)...Well it was billed
like that, but it wasn't decided there. That
match-up was a wash...

The real match-up was #2 Def in Country (FSU)
vs Non-existent UNC Offense. I think that was in
97 or somewhere in there.

Nope...FSU has a Great Defense and at the moment
a Good Offense.

Who's in our way...It will take a Great Offense just
to gain a "wash" with our Defense.

And it will take a Great Defense...Maybe a Super
Defense when we get all of our people healthy, to
shut us totally down. There isn't a great defense
left on our schedule.

Not saying we will win 'em all...But I am saying we
are capable of winning 'em all.

Also saying that this is "Chris Rix's Team" now.

He made a mark for himself...brought his team
back to win the game.

Buffs are going down big-time...

Then Duke...Then a week off...

Then we'll welcome the 'Canes and their soft
defensive front to Tally...

Hrm, all I know about Colorado is that Colorado St beat them this year. Thats not a good sign for the Buffalos. Also they shared the title with GA Tech back in 1990.

Oh Yeah...

I forgot...

Bobby agreed...

Mickey was hired...

And his first choice of a skilled athlete to play on
the Defensive side of the ball...was the Best
Running QB in Florida and one of the best in the
nation. 'Noles signed him and Mickey moved him
to Cornerback.

His Name was..................................

Deion Sanders

Hey Metro...

We don't "jump on anyone!"

We're the jumped on one's...

I understand your thoughts about great FSU
QB's. But like many of us have posted in the past.
Those other great one's didn't get their first start
until they were redshirt Juniors (Which is what
Rix is now) Because of Jared Jones being kicked
off the team...Rix was thrust into the lineup before
he was ready. He's been given somewhat of a bad
rap, in the past...that he didn't 100 percent deserve.

He'll be OK!

And believe this or not...Rix is well thought of by
NFL scouts. They believe he has ALL the tools
to make it in the NFL.

Well...

Actually...

After Van Pelt gave CSU the lead over Colo...

Colorado rallied in the closing seconds and the
Buffs beat CSU this year 42-35.

Then they beat UCLA 16-14, when the Bruins lost
their QB on the first play of the game.

Thrashed by Wash St last week 47-26!

They're giving up 32 points a game and scoring
28 a game.

'Noles will in this one 41-17!

My bad on the Colorado/Colorado St game, I should get my facts straight.

If Wash St can score 47 on them, FSU will win easily.

Colorado should give the 'Noles a good test. I know I will be listening to the game on the radio!! :)

BTW, congrats to Rix for not giving up and for really putting forth a good effort this year.

Your Matchup with CU is gonna be tough, they are a streaky team, if you catch em on a hot day they will play to the wire, perhaps you'll get them on a sloppy day or put some pressure on em early and build a lead, if so it could go smoothly, should be a competitive game.

:)
