CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Well-rested because of foul trouble and eager to make a contribution, Shelden Williams carried Duke past Virginia on Sunday night.
Williams, who played just seven minutes in the first half, scored 17 of his 21 points after halftime -- including 13 of the team's 15 in one stretch after a second-half run by the Cavaliers -- in Duke's 93-71 victory.
"I couldn't worry about my three fouls,'' the 6-foot-9 sophomore said. "I was trying to go out there and play hard and get my game on.''
Williams wasn't alone -- the No. 2 Blue Devils had five other players in double figures -- but he was the one they went to time and again after the Cavaliers' last run pulled them to 63-51 with 14:15 remaining.
Coach Mike Krzyzewski didn't start Williams in the second half for fear his excitement would lead to a fourth foul, but when he finally put him in, it was over.
"We were going to him right away, kind of getting him back in the game, and then he really got back in the game,'' Krzyzewski said.
"He made some great, great plays.''
Williams finished 6-for-12 from the field, 9-for-10 from the foul line and grabbed 12 rebounds as Duke enjoyed a 43-30 advantage on the glass.
The night also was a big one for Duke's J.J. Redick, a Roanoke native who broke the ACC record for consecutive free throws made. Redick made the only two he attempted and has made 50 in a row dating to last season. He broke a tie with former Virginia star Jeff Lamp, who hit 48 in a row in the 1979-80 season.
"It was great to break it here,'' Redick said, noting that Krzyzewski pulled him from the Blue Devils last game to give him that chance.
"I had a bunch of people at the game from back home.''
Redick also was 4-for-5 from 3-point range and finished with 14 points. Chris Duhon added 15, Shavlik Randolph and Luol Deng 12 each.
Duke (12-2, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) has won nine straight.
Virginia (10-3, 0-2) was seeking its third victory in its last four games against Duke at University Hall, but instead lost for the 17th time in the last 19 meetings. Duke now leads the all-time series 102-47.
Devin Smith led Virginia with 19 points, going 5-for-6 from 3-point range, while Elton Brown scored 13 and Donte Minter had 12.
Brown said he deserved much of the blame for the loss. He missed several times from in close and let Williams take over after halftime.
"He got the ball and we weren't playing good 'D,''' Brown said. "That was my fault. I wasn't checking him. In the first half, I was going right at him and he got in foul trouble. I let off him'' in the second half.
Duke led 46-38 at halftime and used a 10-0 burst early in the second half to push its lead to 63-45. Virginia started slowly coming back, but then Williams began outmuscling the Cavaliers underneath and dominating.
Virginia never got closer than 11 after the 10-0 spurt.
