Noles down the Eagles
by Drew Hankin

Florida State opened the series against the Golden Eagles of Oral Roberts with an 8-3 win on Friday afternoon in front of 2,219 fans at put a five-spot on the board in the eighth inning to break the game open and cruised to their fifth win of the season.

Rhett James (1-0) picked up his first win of the season in relief of starter Hunter Jones. Jones went five innings and only gave up one run on five hits with only one walk, and struck out seven batters. Hunter Davis finished the game with a scoreless ninth inning for the Tribe.

FSU took a 2-0 lead in the second inning Derrick Smith singled to left and scored on Gibbs Chapman's second homerun of the year.

Two innings later, the Golden Eagles cut the lead in half when first baseman Josh Lex hit his first of two homers of the game. Chapman singled to lead off the bottom of the inning, but Ryne Malone grounded into the first of three Seminole double plays to end the inning.

Matt Sauls led off the fifth inning with his second hit of the day but Aaron Cheesman grounded into the second twin-killing.

The Noles finally extended their lead in the next inning when Stephen Drew homered to right-center, his third of the season.

After a scoreless seventh, ORU tied up the game with Lex's second homerun, a two-run monster shot that nearly hit the lights in left
field.

The eighth inning is where everything came unraveled for the Golden Eagles, when they brought in reliever Conner Tinkler to replace starter Dennis Bigsley. Drew and Eddy Martinez-Esteve both singled before Smith singled in Drew to give the Noles a one-run lead. Oral Roberts brought in Justin Ramsey to relieve Tinkler, but he didn't fare much better, as Dennis Anderson sacrificed the runners up with a bunt. Bryan Zech then reached on a fielder's choice that saw Danny Wardell who was pinch-running for Martinez-Esteve, get tagged out at the plate. After Malone walked to load the bases, Sauls drew another walk to force in Smith and extended FSU's lead. A balk by Ramsey then brought home Zech before Cheesman singled to center that brought home Sauls and Malone and gave Florida State an 8-3 lead.

Florida State improved to 5-3 on the season while ORU lost their first game and fell to 3-1. The same two teams play on Saturday at 2:00 with Eddie Cannon (2-0, 1.38 ERA, 15 K) on the mound for the Seminoles against lefty Matt Hancock (1-0, 1.80 ERA, 3 K) for the Golden Eagles.

Florida State clips Oral Roberts again
by Drew Hankin

FSU made it two in a row over Oral Roberts University on Saturday, with a 6-4 win in front of 2,873 fans on Saturday afternoon. The Seminoles played errorless ball for the second consecutive game, and got some fantastic starting pitching from Eddie Cannon.

Cannon (3-0) allowed only three runs on six hits, all of them coming on a homerun hit by Golden Eagle right fielder Kevin Lamb in the second inning. For the game, Cannon struck out nine batters in 6.2 innings without walking a batter.

Florida State started off the game with a couple runs in the bottom of the first inning. Back to back walks to Shane Robinson and Stephen Drew were followed by a double steal, before a sacrifice fly by Danny Wardell brought in the first run. Drew then came home on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.

After Lamb's homerun in the second, the Seminoles tied it up in the hird inning when Cheesman was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a ground out, and scored two-out double by Eddy Martinez-Esteve.

Two innings later, the Noles took the lead for good when Shane Robinson reached on bunt single, moved to second on an error by third baseman Boomer Welles, and scored on a single to left by Derrick Smith. Bryan Zech then singled in Martinez-Esteve to give the Seminoles a 5-3 lead.

FSU got their final run of the game in the sixth frame when Ryne Malone doubled to right, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Gibbs Chapman, and scored on a balk by ORU reliever Tim Robertson.

The Golden Eagles managed one more run in the eighth inning
off Seminole reliever Brian Schultz when center fielder Matt VanDerBosch singled, stole second, and scored on a single by first baseman Dennis Bigley.

Kevin Lynch got into a little bit of trouble in the ninth inning with a couple of runners on, but got out of the jam and picked his first save of the season.

Florida State improved to 6-3 on the season, and has now won four games in a row while the Golden Eagles fell to 3-2. Florida State will go for the sweep on Sunday at 1:00 with Mark Sauls (0-1, 7.04 ERA) on the mound against lefty Matt Hancock (1-0, 1.80 ERA) for Oral Roberts.

Seminoles complete the sweep over ORU
by Drew Hankin

Seminole skipper Mike Martin won his 1300th career game and never even got to see the end of it after being ejected during a 4-3 win over Oral Roberts on Sunday afternoon. Martin was tossed in what is thought to be the first time in over fifteen years at home. The incident happened in the eighth inning for arguing a call that umpire Bruce Ravan blew at first base. The runner eventually scored the tying-run, that forced some heroics by Matt Sauls in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Noles got a good start from his brother Mark Sauls, who had been hit hard in his previous two appearances. Sauls went 5.1 innings and only allowed one earned run on four hits while striking out five batters. Rhett James (2-0) picked up his second win of the weekend with 3.2 innings of relief work.

Florida State started out with a run in the bottom of the first inning when Sauls led off with a walk, moved to second on an error by Golden Eagle starting pitcher Matt Hancock, to third on a fly ball, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Danny Wardell.

In the next inning, Brant Peacher led off with a singled to center and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Shane Robinson. Dennis Anderson then drew a walk before Aaron Cheesman singled to center to score Peacher. Anderson then moved to third on a fielder's choice, and scored on a single to right by Stephen Drew.

After a couple of scoreless innings, the Golden Eagles got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth when Seminole starter Mark Sauls hit first baseman Dennis Bigley with a pitch, then threw a wild pitch to move the runner to second, and then gave up an single to third baseman Boomer Welles that brought home Bigley.

Oral Roberts picked up their second run in the next inning when centerfielder Matt VanderBosch reached on an error on Mark Sauls, stole second, and scored on a single to right by second baseman Brian Hanson. After another single, Sauls was relieved by James, who got out of the inning with a double play.

After the blown call in the eighth inning that allowed VanderBosch to reach on an infield single, Hnason moved him to third with a single to left, and shortstop Grant Plumley scored him with a grounder to third.

Pinch hitter Gibbs Chapman led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt before Matt Sauls brought him home and ended the game with a single through the left side.

With the win, Florida State improved to 7-3 on the season while Oral Roberts fell to 3-3. The Seminoles have the week off before hosting UNC-Asheville for a three game series next weekend. Game times are 3:30 on Friday, 2:00 on Saturday, and 1:00 on Sunday.

We've actually won 5 games in a row. 2 games against Jacksonville University and the 3 against Oral Roberts. :D

Eddie Cannon is pitching a lot better and I believe that by the middle of the season, FSU will be back to being it's powerhouse team we all expect from them year in and year out. 04-rock
