Quote:On the road again

• Marvin Williams sets sail for the McDonald's All-American Game in Oklahoma.

For a guy who hates traveling, Marvin Williams sure does a lot of it.

Bremerton's All-American prep basketball star is traveling again today, making his way to Oklahoma City -- the site of the McDonald's All-American Game.

The game, Wednesday at 6 p.m., will be broadcast on ESPN, which is good for West Sound basketball fans. Precious few saw Williams' performance in Wednesday's EA Sports Roundball Classic. That game was televised on an obscure station available only to those with satellite television.

Apparently, we missed quite a performance.

Williams impressed the crowd, countless agents and scouts and the many NBA front-office types who were on hand, scoring 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting. He had four Sportscenter-esque dunks.

That performance, against the nation's best high-school talent, is sure to fuel the hype: Will Williams play for North Carolina or in the NBA this fall?

In part, this all-star road swing is about learning just where 6-foot-9 forward might land in the June 26 NBA Draft, should he declare himself eligible by the May 12 deadline.

"I haven't heard much of anything," said Williams. "I was just with the whole team, so I didn't learn anything new."

His parents, on the other hand, heard plenty from agents and scouts.

"Everybody I talked to said he's a lottery (pick)," said Marvin Williams Sr., who was besieged by agents and scouts.

Marvin Jr. has maintained he's still planning on going to Chapel Hill, N.C. But if he's a sure thing to be a lottery pick (top 13) in the draft, he'd consider making the leap.

The Williams camp is still skeptical about what the agents and scouts are saying. So they are relying on Sonny Vaccaro. Vaccaro, who works for Reebok, is the founder of the Roundball Classic, which he started in Pittsburgh in 1965.

"He's like the godfather of basketball," Marvin Sr. said.

And Vaccaro is plugged in like a lamp. Supposedly, he can illuminate like one, too.

While agents and scouts are a starting point for draft status, general managers and other front-office types are the ultimate judges.

"He'll call them and get the real scoop," Marvin Sr. said. "He really likes Marvin. His wife and Andrea (Gittens, Marvin's mom) click really well.

"Sonny is the one who really knows the answer, but he isn't saying much yet."

For now, the focus is on getting Marvin Jr. through this all-star game. Then, he'll take April completely off from basketball to ponder his future.

"I'm not sure what he really wants to do," Marvin Sr. said. "I know he really wants to go Carolina ..."

But millions of dollars are hard to ignore.

• ALSO: Marvin Jr. will not compete in the dunk or 3-point shooting competitions that are part of the McDonald's festivities Monday.

Why in the heck would you rely on an agent to tell you where your going to be drafted, especially when they will get their hands on a part of whatever you get... Why not try to talk to the GM's/coaches that are interested in you??

Unless he puts on a major show during the game, which he may, his stock has fallen this week.

What are the chances he saw what happened to the Miss St. star that listened to his agent and left early for the NBA only to have everything fall to pieces...

Why has his stock fallen Rick??
