FSU collects 27 hits in rout of ACC rival
TALLAHASSEE DEMOCRAT STAFF REPORT

WINSTON - SALEM, N.C. - Florida State pounded out a season-high 27 hits en route to an easy 27-3 victory at Wake Forest Friday afternoon. All nine Seminole starters had a hit and FSU had six home runs, including two from designated hitter Eddy Martinez-Esteve.

Bryan Zech recorded a career-high four hits while Ryne Malone had three hits and was a single away from the cycle. Starter Eddie Cannon (8-5) earned the win, allowing just one run on five hits in six innings of work.

The scoring started in the top of the first as the Seminoles (36-19, 15-8 ACC) took advantage of two Wake Forest (17-31, 4-19 ACC) errors to bring in a pair of runs. Zech singled and eventually scored on a passed ball. Stephen Drew, who had reached on an error, scored when Demon Deacon left fielder Casey Sterk misplayed a fly ball.

After Zech doubled in a run in the second inning, FSU broke the game open with nine runs on eight hits in the third. Drew had a two-run single, and Malone produced a run-scoring triple in that inning.

Martinez-Esteve continued the scoring barrage with a two-run homer to right in the fourth. Malone followed with a solo home run, his 10th of the season, to make it 15-0 through four innings of play.

Wake Forest got on the board in the fifth on Ben Ingold's RBI-double to right.

In the sixth inning, Martinez-Esteve hit his second home run of the game to start a seven-run inning. The home run, which cleared the wall in center field, was Martinez-Esteve's team-high 16th of the season. Four more runs crossed the plate after the home run to make it 22-1.

Danny Wardell doubled home Gibbs Chapman in the top of the eighth and Brant Peacher later hit a three-run homer to right. Reliever Kevin Lynch made the most of a pinch-hit appearance with a solo home run to right. The home run was the first of Lynch's career and the sixth of the game for the Seminoles.

Wake Forest added two runs in the ninth to make the final score 27-3.

Zech (4 for 5), Malone (3 for 6), Dennis Anderson (3 for 6), Wardell (2 for 2), Aaron Cheesman (2 for 3), Peacher (2 for 3), Matt Sauls (2 for 4), Shane Robinson (2 for 4) and Martinez-Esteve (2 for 5) were the nine Seminoles with multi-hit games.
