UNC.
We've had the most basketball success. dook's current success does nothing to overthrow what we did before the 1990's. We're near the top of the ACC in total wins in football (surprising to many, I'm sure). We've never been a dominant program in football, but until recently we were always good. And, we always have a good baseball team.
Now, I'm assuming most people are going to weigh those three sports heavily in their analyses. If you only counted those three sports, we would still stack up favorably. But, when you add in every other sport, then I don't think it's a contest. (And, I believe that whether you weigh the highest-profile sports more or treat every sport equally.)
I think we're the only ACC school to have a national championship in women's basketball, but I may be wrong about that. Either way, we've been consistently good in that for as long as its been followed. Only dook with its current success has been as consistent.
We've been a dominant program in lacrosse until very recently (although a final 8 showing this year wasn't too shabby). We have 4 lacrosse national championships. Same goes for field hockey, which is a sport that many other ACC programs would brag about as well. We have 4 national championships in that, too.
All I would really need to say to shore up this discussion is: women's soccer. We've dominated that sport like no other school has ever dominated a sport.
And, our men's soccer team has been consistently good, too (with a recent national title under its belt).
I think that part that amazes me is seeing how many Olympic sports we're competitive at year in and year out. It's rare that you see a UNC team in an Olympic sport at the bottom of the ACC standings. That goes for swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's golf, track & field, gymnastics, etc.
We consistently finish first in the ACC in the Sear's Cup standings. While this isn't and shouldn't be the only factor in determining the success of an athletic program, I think it still says a great deal. We've also done this the past couple of years while our highest-profile sports have uncharacteristically struggled. I think that goes to show just how good the program is across the board.
Now, it's time for everyone to call me a typical arrogant tarhole. :D
