Seminoles beat the Gators
by Drew Hankin

After splitting the first two games of the series in Tallahassee, the Noles and Gators moved to Gainesville for the final contest of the season on Tuesday night, and Florida State came away with a 9-4 victory over #4 Florida.

FSU got a sold 5.1 inning start out of Mark Sauls, who allowed three runs on five hits while walking and striking out two batters. Matt DiBlasi and Kevin Lynch both pitched some key relief, and Tyler Chambliss earned his twelfth save of the season with 1.1 innings to close out the game.

The offensive stars for the game were numerous, with designated hitter Brant Peacher hitting a two run homerun in the fourth, first baseman Danny Wardell bouncing a homerun off the top of the scoreboard in right during the eighth inning, third baseman Ryne Malone with three RBIs, and centerfielder Shane Robinson getting on base four times.

Florida State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Robinson drew a lead-off walk, went to second on a ground ball, and scored on single to center by catcher Aaron Cheesman.

The Seminoles made it 2-0 in the next frame when Peacher walked and scored on a double into the right field corner by right fielder Jack Rye. The Tribe could have had more, but Rye was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple.

The Gators tied it up in the next inning on an RBI-triple by third baseman Brandon McArthur, and fielder's choice by catcher Brian Jeroloman.

After a scoreless third inning, shortstop Ryne Jernigan reached on a two-out single before Peacher hit a 3-0 pitch out of the park for his second homerun of the season that made it 4-2. UF got one of those runs back in the bottom half on a Jeroolman single to right that scored first baseman Matt LaPorta.

With one runner on and one out in the sixth, the Seminoles changed to the lefty DiBlasi on the mound. DiBlasi got the next two batters out with a swinging strikeout, and a ground ball to end the inning.

Second baseman Tony Thomas Jr led off the top of the seventh with a walk, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Robinson, and scored on a fielder's choice that also saw Malone reach first safely when the Gator third baseman threw late to the plate.

After a three-up, three-down inning for DiBlasi, Wardell homered for the team-leading seventh time this season and gave FSU a 6-3 lead.

Florida tried to get a rally going in the bottom of the inning, when leftfielder Gavin Dickey singled and went to second on another single by second baseman Adam Davis. After the Seminoles changed pitchers, Dickey was picked off by Lynch for a big second out of the inning. The pick-off turned out to be even more key, as LaPorta hit the next pitch into left for a single that would have scored Dickey. With runners on the corners and two outs, the Noles turned to their Chambliss to shut the door on the Gators, but it didn't happen right away, as right fielder Brian LeClerc singled in Davis to cut the FSU lead to 6-4. Chambliss then got the final batter of the inning to struck out swinging.

The ninth inning turned out to be the biggest one offensively for the Noles, as three runs put the game away. With one out, Thomas was hit by a pitch and went to third on a single by Robinson. Alert base running allowed Robinson to take second on the throw. Malone then doubled into the right field corner to score both runners and handed FSU an 8-4 lead.  After Malone advanced to third on a wild pitch, left fielder Gibbs Chapman brought him home on a single to left that fell just out of the reach of the fielder's glove and gave Florida State a 9-4 lead.

Chambliss gave up a lead-off single in the bottom of the ninth, but got the final three batters in order to end the game.

With the win, the Noles improved to 38-14, while the Gators fell to 31-13 on the season. FSU now leads the all-time series 107-83. After a couple of days off, FSU heads to Maryland for a three-game series this weekend against the Terrapins. Game times are 7:00 on Friday, 7:00 on Saturday, and 1:00 on Sunday.
