Future of the Oil Drum
After the new basketball arena is finished, I believe the Dome is slated to be torn down. With all of the class usage, events, and the fact that it could make an excellent indoor practice facility for football, wouldn't it be smarter to keep the dome?

There was some talk a while back about tearing down the Dome, but its value as an indoor practice facility and event host are true and that talk of a demolition has subsided. In fact, the athletics department knows its value, primarily for indoor track and practice

Chances are the Dome is with us for many years to come.

dome
Another thing to consider; we have absolutely NO idea when the new basketball arena will be built. I will believe it when I see it. Hoping...

The way they have let Memorial Center go to pot is disgraceful.

Believe it or not, it is one of the 60 largest arenas for college basketball in America (or somewhere around that- don't kill me if it's 65) IF the Fire Marshall isn't involved.

But they'll let the fire marshall dictate what is going on.

Not that they don't want the fire marshall to do that. It makes Memorial Center that much more obsolete and increases the need for a new arena.

However, wouldn't it be nicer if the place could be used for football if needed for a couple of years- instead of holding $15 million over the head of the football foundation?

Wouldn't it be nice if ETSU could sell 10,000 tickets for a basketball game that would decide if they made the NCAAs or not? Or to hold some concerts in there? Or arena football?

I don't really like the eyesore known as the dome but we might as well keep it for basketball until we can build something really nice. Because if we try to build it soon we will probably try to model it after a high school arena as well. If we are going to do it we need to do it right and build one similar to what App State has.

I have posted the Avatar to the left how many times . . .

And you call MEMORIAL CENTER an eyesore?

I don't know if the dome is worse than the Eastland Mall but it is defiantly the worst eyesore on campus. Nevertheless it should be kept until we can build something like App state or WCU. No more modeling after High School facilities!!

I am currently in Pittsburgh and writing in an old steelworker's house caticorner to an abandoned steel mill.

Please do not tell me Memorial Center is an eyesore.

For Johnson City reference- the former Guy's Cafe downtown is an eyesore.

Memorial Center is not.

It is an eyesore for the campus though. You'd have to admit that.

Actually, I think it's the most distinctive building in Johnson City.

And there are PLENTY of other buildings on campus I don't think are as attractive.

Perhaps the majority of them.
