Well South Carolina made sure Spurrier isn't going anywhere. extended his contract though 2012 and gave him a raise.

Quote:COLUMBIA, S.C. (Dec. 2) - South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier has almost a half-million more reasons to stay with the Gamecocks.

The university's board of trustees on Saturday approved a reworked contract that increases Spurrier's yearly salary to $1.75 million, up from his current package of about $1.25 million. The first coach to lead South Carolina to a bowl in his first two seasons also had his contract extended through the 2012 season.

Spurrier said he hoped the new deal would end speculation he would be anywhere else than South Carolina next season and beyond.

He wanted prospects to know "if you come to South Carolina, you're going to play for coach Spurrier and his coaches."

The agreement also increases the buyout Spurrier or the school would pay to terminate the contract from $250,000 per remaining year to $500,000.

I'm tellin ya, if football comes back Mullins is gone. He won't be here for any of it to happen, and I don't think Barbie Breedlove will be either.
Rod that was great about Spurrier. Alabama all but offered to kiss his ass on national TV and he said, nah, I'll stay in Columbia, and ultimately for the same reason that none of the three Big East coaches being talked about should go anywhere.
And after yesterday, Chan Gailey might be available by 2009.

I'm willing to bite.

What makes you think Mullins will be gone if football returns?

I am telling you that Stanton likes Mullins because he doesn't have to worry about hearing "We didn't do it that way at Marshall-St. Francis-Houston" or knowing that he will use the AD position as a stepping stone.

Mullins is content with being the AD at ETSU. He is also power hungry (witness the car ads- name me ONE other athletic director who would try to put his signature on a program in such a way. Also name me one area in the country which would allow Mullins to do such a thing with his track record).

I am telling you- if it comes back- it will be a loser- I would be willing to lay some coin with odds that he'll pursue Hamilton's return- and Mullins will spin this so he will be looked at as "The man who brought ETSU football outside!"

And nobody will stand up to him or refute him.

Stanton is gone in a couple of years. Football coming back is allegedly his last project, and if he doesn't get it done, the next president will, at which time Mullins is gone. Either way, Dave isn't going to support football coming back, and if the boss wants something and the employee fights him, the employee usually finds another job. (Ask App State's last A.D.)

What evidence do you have that Stanton is leaving in a couple of years?

Furthermore, with the ruin that ETSU athletics has been put in during his tenure, what makes you think even if it is revived the program will be any good?

If you actually want to win in football if it is brought back you would hire back Cavan not Hamilton.

Cavan would not be welcome back at ETSU.

Mind you- I would like him to return as a fundraiser- which last I heard is what he was doing at Georgia. I think he could do a helluva lot of good wooing people on the golf course- turning an occassional yard to the media- basically the charmed life. He would be the PERFECT fundraiser for the athletic dept.

Unfortunately, whenever his name is brought up- here's what I hear-

A- Cavan was a racist.

B- Cavan brought thugs to ETSU

C- Academics were secondary under Mike Cavan.

I have to defend Cavan on the first one- because it's such an ugly accusation. I don't recall him benching a black player for a white one or anything like that.

He did recruit Herschel Walker and plenty of outstanding black players here. I once had a talk with a TV reporter from Atlanta in the PNC Park Press Box about Cavan and the reporter INSISTED that he had known Cavan for 25 years and he was not.

I don't think Cavan would be a good coach now- at least not as a head man- because he's just been out of it for so long.
