Particularly impressive was Davidson's effort against a fully-funded VMI squad. Davidson went for a two-point conversion that would've given them a win.

Don't forget the PFL champ plays the winner of the NEC in the Gridiron Classic. The NEC had a good weekend, with wins over Lehigh and Fordham of the Patriot League.

The NEC now allows scholarships, but I doubt they were a factor last weekend (most scholarship recruits are redshirting).

I wouldn't call VMI football competitive though. They never have been.

PFL scores from 9-9-06:

BUTLER 30
Hanover (Div III) 20

Wingate (Div II) 22
DAVIDSON 16

DAYTON 35
Wittenberg (Div III) 28

DRAKE 40
Upper Iowa (Div II) 7

Newberry (Div II) 23
MOREHEAD STATE 7

SAN DIEGO 41

Lurking Dog, a little clarification please...

Central Connecticut State is in the NEC, right? Are all the NEC teams (and PFL teams for that matter) strictly non-scholarship? Also, how many scholarships are allowed in NAIA, Div III, Div II, Div I-AA, and Div I-A?

Central Ct is in the NEC. The PFL is nonscholarship, but the NEC is not. As of 2000, the NEC allowed up to 30 people per team ("counters" in NCAA-speak) to receive athletic aid up to 100% of their financial need, as demonstrated by the federal calculation.

With the last recruiting class, the NEC expanded its athletic aid by allowing up to 30 scholarship equivalencies per team, regardless of need.

Owlzfan is correct on the NCAA scholarship limits. It's 24 for NAIA.

It's worth noting that all scholarship players in I-A get full rides, whereas I-AA may give partial scholarships. So the I-AA limit is 63 equivalencies which may be split among up to 85 counters. Most I-AA squads have 85 people receiving at least some athletic aid.

With the PFL, of course, no one is receiving athletic aid. You can't even accept a golf scholarship and stay eligible for football.

I should also say that you can't assume a team has a certain number of scholarship equivancies because of its division level (Obviously, PFL programs aren't fully funded).

I believe that a majority of D-II programs are not fully funded. Many conferences have a limit of 18, 21, or 24. One east coast D-II conference is nonscholarship.

And even in conferences that allow up to the NCAA limit, there will be some programs that fall a little short. Examples: I-AA South Dakota State with about 50 scholarships...D-II Truman State with 30-35, depending on how many in-state recruits they get.

San Diego is up to #20 after smacking my Drake Bulldogs.

Their schedule has been shuffled so they can accept an at-large bid to the Division I-AA playoffs, if offered. I think it could happen if (previous San Diego victim) Yale wins the Ivy League. That would show adequate strength of schedule for a playoff bid.

Yale shared the Ivy title, but there was no playoff bid for San Diego.

Instead the Toreros went to the Gridiron Classic and beat Monmouth 27-7.

I assume Campbell is recruiting this year for scrimmages next fall. Any word on early progress?
