If there's ever been a suprise team, it's been the White Sox. sure they've had great pitching in Garland, Buehrle (sp?) and Garcia (additions of El Duque and Contreras are looking good and making the Yanks look retarded, bye bye Cashman), but seriously. Konercko, Dye and Pierzynski are pretty good bats, but they're not a stud line-up or all-star loaded. Just good sound defensive baseball with just enough punch to win games. Who would have thunk it?

What about Brian Jordan, he still plays baseball and had to quit football because he couldn't cut it.

If you think there is more activity in baseball than football, you are nuts! Try watching the right fielder in a baseball game for the whole 9 innings.

I can't stand the sport. Don't like most pro sports now anyway, but baseball tops the list. The national game IS football, followed closely by basketball. Baseball does lead the NHL, so don't think ya'll are in last place. And if it were a sport, which IT IS NOT, NASCAR would make baseball fourth on the list.

Last, but not least, most experts would know that soccer would be the most physically demanding team sport.
Tigernole79, thanks for providing the explanation about Bo and Deion.

Yeah, baseball is so-o-o-o much much physically demanding than that sissy football. That's why baseball plays 162 games a year and football 16.

Baseball is definitely ahead of the NHL. But I believe the NHL didn't play this year!

You're right about soccer being probably the most physically demanding team sport. Constant running. I suppose tennis or a marathon is the most demanding individual sport.

Quote:Not really jumping on your case bossman, but don't come on a baseball thread and just bash America's pastime, especially when others get thrashed for coming onto other threads and just flaunting negative comments around.

Tigerpikapp, I apologize for giving my opinion on the untouchable and sacred sport of baseball.

Quote:Baseball may be boring to you and that's fine, it's your opinion and thank God it's a free world (well, at least country).

Thank you for allowing me to at least have an opinion!

Quote:Sure baseball could benefit from a salary cap. Yes the Yanks do spend a lot of money, but have only won 2 of their 26 as baseball's top payrollers (3 more under George without being that either)...free agency and boom of baseball popularity is what has exploded player pay, not the Yanks.

I used the Yankees as the prime example since it is obvious they simply go out and purchase whoever they need for yet another run at a championship.

Baseball is a boom in the summer since there is essentially no competition for the sports dollar. If the NFL or college basketball were played in summer, baseball would be lower than their current 4th ranking (see TigerNole79 comments).

Quote:More people watch baseball than any other American sport,

162 baseball games x 34 teams.

16 football games x 32 teams.

82 basketball games x 30 teams.

You're probably right interms of actual attendees at games.

Yet the NFL draws the most TV viewership and the network bids for those games are prolific indeed. I wonder why?

Quote:no American sport is older than baseball, baseball has withstood the test of time and is still around and being played basically the same way it's always been...not football, hockey or basketball can claim that.

I'm not debating baseball isn't a valid sport! Sure it's been here for a while. But do you think Abner Doubleday envisioned designated hitters, an all-star game determining the championship home field advantage, the mound being lowered, night games, and expansion of the season from 144 games to 162 games?

Quote:outside of the soccer boom, no sport is played by more Americans than baseball.

Because it is so easy and not so physically demanding as football, hockey, basketball, volleyball, etc. Softball evolved from baseball and I would bet nearly everyone has played in a softball game or league. Don't forget whiffleball and corkball.

Quote:Baseball will be and still is America's pastime...it's were we turn in history to rekindle old memories, it's like America's historical note card.

It is a legit sport, but it is being replaced by football as the national sport. We look back at baseball with fondness, like we do the Studebaker. It is simply being replaced by a better product.

Quote:Needless to say, don't knock it, especially if you've never played it (and maybe you had and weren't good, or didn't like it, whatever) and just hate the sport.

I played baseball. I just enjoyed playing - and watching - football more.

Quote:I hate hockey, cricket, bowling, pool, poker (the last three astonishes me that they're played on ESPN), but I don't go around bashing them on people's threads to just get my two cents in!

I hate those sports, too. Especially "poker". I also hate racing (humans, cars, horses), golf (more boring than baseball), and track & field events.

Sorry if you perceive my comments as bashing. I was just giving my honest opinion. I guess I would be shot if I lived in Cuba (which has a fairly competitve baseball program itself).

Quote:I'm not really attacking you, just pointing out some misguided or misconceived notions.

I'm very much relieved you are not attacking me. I will sleep much better now.

Please also understand I am not really bashing baseball, I'm just pointing out its value as a spectator sport from my personal perception. 04-cheers

Enjoy your baseball this summer.

I love this thread. When is MattyG coming back??

In case anyone is interested Adam Dunn (aka the next triple crown winner) is 3rd in HR in all of MLB - he also is 3rd in strike outs and is batting a whopping .243.

If you think there is more activity in baseball than football, you are nuts! Try watching the right fielder in a baseball game for the whole 9 innings.

Compare trying to run down 120 ft fly ball, with a 50 yard (not a math wiz, but wouldn't that be 150+ ft) bomb. Most WR in football routinely run 15-20 yard decoys.

I used to be a Brave's fan, and that was back when I would watch games with my friend after work and we would have a celebration every time they won a game, which wasn't ofter because they were the worst team in baseball.

Bo was Horrible in baseball. Feast or famine. He either hit a homerun or struck out. Career .250 hitter. World class speed but could never steal 30 bases in a year. A terrrible fielder--12 errors in left field one year. He was a god in football. At least for Bo, football was a lot easier to him.

Michael Jordan hit .200 in double A--wasn't too easy for him.

Certainly, overall athleticism in more prevalent in other sports, but it takes a certain person to throw a ball 90 mph or to hit a ball successfully 1/3 rd of the time.

As for the salary cap ruining baseball--how do you explain that in the last 20 years, the NBA has has 6 teams as champs, compared to 12 in baseball. In the past 5 years, the NBA has 3, MLB has 5.

Another great thing about baseball is that EVERY play has a meaning. A outfielder might shirt two steps to his right or left if he knows the pitcher will throw a curve, a fielder might shift on a 2 strike count because the hitter will be less inclined to pull the ball and just want to make contact..there are so many nuances about the game that go unappreciated by casual observers, so I guess that is why they think it is boring.

Yeah, like John Kruk or David Wells - these guys are exceptions, but baseball is more of a "skill" game I think than an athletic game when compared to other sports - particularly when consider the high degree of specialization in pitching now and the use of the DH in the AL for guys that really cannot play the field. Not knocking baseball, just pointing out my perceptions.

Quote:Another great thing about baseball is that EVERY play has a meaning.

While I do not disagree - I would argue that this is much more true in football than any other sport - doubly so when you consider how many more plays a baseball game has and how many more games baseball plays.

More of us Reds' fans out here than one might think....I recall a poll the CA did back in the late 70s asking Memphians what team was their favorite....the Cards, of course, was the top team but Cincy wasn't too far behind, probably riding the wave of their Big Red Machine success. They're still a couple of good pitchers away from having a contending team....St. Louis is still the team to beat.

But, you can never "take a knee" in baseball. Even a seemingly 8 run lead in the 9th requires continued effort. In football, a 10 point lead and the ball with 1 minute to go is often just knee, knee, knee...
I don't disagree that football (almost always) requires (or should) strategy every play, but the CASUAL observer will just see a 5 second play, a 25 second break, a five second play.....not knowing or caring about the deep throw for the purpose of stretching out the d to improve the run game..they just see a neat long throw.

In baseball, the same person will watch a pitcher on an 0-2 count waste a pitch to get the batter fishing, or watch the hitter be defensive and foul 4 pitches off and find that boring, whereas a true fan will acknowledge the fact that this is fun.
