Bears Open A-Sun Play This Week
MACON, Ga. – Following a tough non-conference schedule with five teams regionally ranked, the Mercer women’s soccer team opens its Atlantic Sun Conference slate this week. The Bears square off against defending A-Sun Tournament champion Campbell Thursday at 7 p.m. and Gardner-Webb Saturday at 4 p.m.
After some early success, Mercer (3-6) struggled offensively the past two weeks but is starting to come together. The Bears controlled much of the first half against Alabama on Sunday, but was unable to capitalize on their chances. Freshman Meghan Castaldo leads the team in scoring with eight points (3 goals, 2 assists), and is tied with sophomore Catie Marshalek for the team lead with three goals.
Campbell (2-4) dropped three straight matches after winning its season opener, and has struggled offensively. The Camels have scored seven goals in six matches. Mary Nitz leads the team with two goals, while Kathryn Saunders leads the squad with two assists. Samar Azem has played well between the pipes for CU, posting a 2.35 GAA and making 36 saves on the season.
Gardner-Webb (2-4) has faced its own offensive struggles this year, scoring only five goals in six games. Brittany Woods leads the Lady Bulldogs with four goals, while Leeanna Woodworth leads the team with three assists. Goalkeeper Corinne Razem has a stellar 1.33 GAA and 39 saves on the year.
“We are very excited to begin our conference play. We undertook a very demanding non-conference schedule to specifically prepare for our conference games,
