GWU vs. BELHAVEN

Where: GWU’s Spangler Stadium

When: 6 p.m.

Coaches: GWU — Steve Patton, 9th year; Belhaven: Don Lee, 1st year

Conferences: GWU is a member of the NCAA 1-AA Big South Conference; Belhaven is a member of the NAIA Mid-South Conference

Records last year: GWU Bulldogs 5-6; Belhaven Blazers 4-7

Series: This is the first football meeting between the two programs

Returning starters: GWU — 8 on offense, 4 on defense; Union — not available

Offensive sets: GWU — multiple spread; Union — spread

Defensive sets: GWU — 4-3; Union — 3-3 stack

Players to watch: GWU — Nick Roberts was 14-for-17 for 259 yards and three touchdowns in last week’s 65-12 win over Union. He also scored a rushing touchdown. ... Running back Kelvin German had 141 all-purpose yards in his GWU debut last week. The junior is a transfer from Middle Tennessee State.

... Wide receiver Duvaughn Flager had 5 catches for 127 yards and a score last week.

Belhaven — The Blazers will break in a new starting quarterback with West Alabama transfer Josh Crouch probably getting the nod.

It’s a green day: Here’s the first (GWU Sports Information Director) Marc Rabb obscure stat of the week. GWU is a perfect 2-0 in Coach Patton’s tenure against teams that wear green helmets. The Bulldogs thumped Webber International, 52-10 in 2003 before drilling Southeastern Louisiana, 52-34, in last year’s season finale.

They said it: GWU Coach Steve Patton on the school’s Hurricane Katrina relief efforts:

“Our prayers and thoughts are still with the residents of all areas of the Gulf Coast that were devastated by Hurricane Katrina. This weekend we happen to be playing a school

that has a roster full of young men who are from the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama. Even Jackson, Miss., where the

school is located, took a solid blow from the storm – so I think it would a great show of support for our neighbors to the South for the fans in Cleveland County to turn out in force for the game.

“Our community has already done a great deal to help, and we are hopeful that spirit will continue (tonight.) I’m thankful that our administration and the folks at WGWG-FM see the value in helping others during a time of need.
