North Texas wins Sun Belt Soccer Championship

MOBILE, Ala. – North Texas’ Heather Hutyra proved why she was the Sun Belt’s Player of the Year during this week’s Sun Belt Conference Soccer Championship and earned further accolades as she was named the Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. The sophomore from Benbrook, Texas scored the first goal of Saturday’s Championship match as UNT (16-3-2) defeated South Alabama 2-0 Saturday afternoon.
With 2:21 left in the first half, Hutyra beat two defenders and USA’s keeper for the games first goal. The goal was her third of the tournament as she scored in each of the Mean Green’s games.
Julie Radford iced the game for UNT when she knocked in a goal at the 76 minute mark. Radford also posted a goal in each match.
With the win UNT will advance to the NCAA tournament for the second year in a row as they were crowned Sun Belt Conference champions last year as well.
USA had strong performances from Kelly Tarrant, Rebecca Kahn, and Kelsie Langford throughout the tournament and the three were named to the All-Tournament team.
The 64-team Women's College Cup bracket will be announced on ESPNews on Monday, November 7 between approximately 4:00 p.m. central time.
