Here's an article about the first signee of the John Pelphrey era.

Jaguars sign sharpshooter

John Pelphrey began putting his signature on South Alabama's basketball program Wednesday, signing sharpshooting guard Chris Young from Daytona Beach Community College.

Young is Pelphrey's first signee since taking control of USA's program a month ago. He averaged 16.5 points each year at Daytona Beach and did the majority of his shooting behind the 3-point line, an area on the floor Pelphrey wants the Jaguars to take advantage of next season.

"Chris is a guard who can play either position," said Pelphrey. "He gives us another guy who can really shoot and because of the way he shoots the ball we've got to try to take advantage of it.

"We're going to put a huge premium on shooting the ball. Chris is someone who will have a chance to really make an impact next year. He can spot up and shoot, but he's also able to penetrate, create his own shot or find the open man. He is a great fit for South Alabama."

Young connected on 42 percent of his 3-point attempts last year. He averaged 4.7 assists, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.3 steals as Daytona Beach reached the semifinals of the state tournament and finished the season with a 25-6 record. He was named the Mid-Florida Conference Player of the Year.

In his first year at Daytona Beach, Young made a school-record 111 treys as the Falcons reached the state finals. He is native of Ft. Pierce, Fla., and played at Port St. Lucie High School.

"Chris is a winner and a tremen dous three-point shooter," said Daytona Beach coach Frank Burnell. "He's a smart player who won't turn the ball over."

Young was also being recruited by Indiana State, Creighton, Florida International and Georgia Southern. Arkansas made a late bid after Stan Heath was hired. He is South Alabama's third signee for the 2002-2003 season, joining 6-6 forward Richard Law and 6-1 point guard Ugo Ezekwe, both from Houston.

Pelphrey has one scholarship remaining and said he plans to find the best player available.

"In the perfect world, you would like to sign another front-court player," said Pelphrey. "But with our situation, we've got to get the best player that can help us next year regardless of the position."
