Is Kent State a good university?
Hi everyone.
I got accepted via a student exchange program to attend Kent State, and I was just wondering if anyone had any input about the University. I'm mainly concerned with the social life there, and the Economics department.
If you think I might have better luck looking for answers elsewhere I'd appreciate it if you could direct me where.
Thanks for any info you could lend me!

Kent is a laid back small town atmosphere, but close enough to Akron and Cleveland to have the benefits of internships and work experience options with some good companies. The social life on the weekends is not great, particularly for underclassmen. It tends to be a suticase college where kids come from within an hour or two and undergrads go home on weekends. I loved it there, but the social life and lack of school spirit was tough to take some times.

Academically, Kent is underrated by the general public, but is a solid school and as a graduate I would say that the business school is very good. My undergrad business degree at Kent was better and tougher than my MBA program at another state school. Also, for you, there is a Federal Reserve bank 1 hour away in Cleveland with internship opportunities if you are intereseted.

Good luck. Some others will come by later with thoughts.

There are some excellent programs and groups for exchange students, who by and large are there 7 days a week. They provide some great social networking and a chance for exchange students and other foreign students to share experiences, etc. Large international student population (though I don't have the numbers, someone here will, I'm sure.)
Don't know about the Econ. programs from personal experience.
Welcome to KSU! Always good to hear from the newest Golden Flash!

Ha!
Well it's nice to see this sort of thing at least provokes some kind of reaction! ;-)
Where I'm from any kind of school spirit is shunned by cynics and/or people who think they have something better to do.

Which is usually true but a lot less fun.

Anyway, I'm still eager for knowledge, please contribute if you have anything more to add or if you can think of another place for me to go ask these questions, I tried looking for more Kent State forums but failed miserably, and the last thing I want to do is start harassing people on that diabolical machine called MySpace.

Cheers.

Try looking up info on your department @ Kent State on myspace.
As far as Kent's siocial life, yea, the bars are the pits. If you get involved with campus life, there are plenty to do on weekends with friends, even if the campus is empty. Get netted in with a club or organization, which are plentiful on campus.
I suggest the Dive. I was involved with that and had things to do most every weekend and most evey night. Even went on spring break with them.

I graduated in 1990, but the Econ. Dept. had a good reputation within the College of Business, so I'm sure it's still good especially since Kent in general has gotten much better. I took a few courses in 2002, and the students are much more competitive then when I was an undergrad.

Like anything else, you will get out of your Kent experience what you put into it. You won't get much out of it if you loiter on the perimeter, but the more you get involved with student organizations, sports events, etc. the more you'll feel apart of the university experience.

I also like the small town campus atmosphere that Kent provides much more than an urban setting like Akron or UC provide.
