KSU Offers 6'8" Forward from Illinois
His name is John Shurna from Glenbard West HS in Glen Ellyn, IL...I've seen him play a lot this past year and he is uneblievable....kinda skinny right now, but possibly one of the best HS post players ive ever seen. He also make some bigtime blocks. Throught the Illinois state playoffs this year i think he averaged around 30 pts 17 rebounds and 5 blocks a game...i was hoping NIU would go after him but it looks like he has some bigtime offers on the way

Class Of 2008 Glenbard West Star John Shurna Of The Illinois Wolves Picks Up Mid-American Conference Scholarship Offer

Class of 2008 Glenbard West star John Shurna continues to see his recruiting stock rise, and is continuing to pile up scholarship offers. Shurna, who had a terrific junior campaign on the hardwood, has now been offered a scholarship from Mid-American Conference heavyweight Kent State University.

Shurna, a 6-8 forward, is a long and highly skilled forward who gets things done both inside and outside. He posted stellar point, rebound and blocked shot totals this season for Glenbard West, and nearly led the team to a birth downstate in the Class AA state tournament.

Shurna, who had already picked up offers from Wisconsin-Green Bay and Loyola prior to Kent State, is certain to see his list of collegiate suitors to expand greatly when he hits the spring and summer basketball circuit with the Illinois Wolves.

Shurna, and the Wolves, will be playing at the Pittsburgh Jam Fest, and also the King James Classic during the month of April.

He sounds like he could be a player, but I don't like Kent's chances if Big Ten types come snooping around.

Just like in Ray's great book "1 Chance 2 Dance" you want the kid to shine enough to justify going after him but not too much that all the major programs come waltz right in and steal away a kid you've invested alot of time and effort recruiting.

Agree, Polish Hammer. Unless you are one of top programs, recruiting is "tricky". Sometimes showing genuine interest early, and offering early, helps.

well first off, i wouldnt let Northwestern scare you guys. Id much rather play for KSU than NW. He would have a better shot of getting to the tourney that way even in the MAC. I dont even think NW could have an above 500 record in the MAC

NIU32, I agree. In 2001, after Kent had beaten Indiana, Trevor Huffman was saying something about having beaten a Big Ten team, then later remembered that they had earlier actually beaten another Big Ten team - Northwestern! Northwestern 's reputation in basketball is definitely not "major". Somehow, oddly, they have actually had more Big Ten contenders in football than in basketball.
