Kent Coaches Becoming Popular
With JC flying out to Utah this week and Oppenheimer being mentioned now for the UMKC post, looks like Kent may have to do some scrambling in the coaching department.

It's a sign of a very good program that our coaches are sought after and not being replaced for poor performances. I'm confident that if needed, Laing will find us another great coach.

Still, the glee of the rest of the MAC to watch the best coach in the league go is premature. Ray has done loads for MAC basketball, but he doesn't always have it right, Dave. If I were this envious of Flashes basketball, I'd spend my time trying to find out who J.C. was recruiting in my backyard.

The longer it goes, the better it gets. If no one contacts J.C. within 30 days of from his last game, the price tag goes up on our coach.

Quote:University of Utah athletic director Chris Hill asked KSU athletic director Laing Kennedy for permission to talk to Christian about the Utes' head coaching vacancy almost two weeks ago. As of Monday, Hill is not believed to have scheduled an interview with Christian.

At least one other candidate is set to meet with Hill, however. The Salt Lake Tribune reported that Michigan State assistant coach Jim Boylen will interview for the job sometime this week. Old Dominion head coach Blaine Taylor has also been added to the list of potential candidates. Taylor has ties to the West from his days as head coach at Montana.

To date, the only coach who is known to interview for the Utah job is Larry Krystkowiak. He removed himself from the running when the Milwaukee Bucks promoted him from assistant coach to head coach within days of his interview with Hill.

Christian has not commented on his potential interest in the Utah job. The KSU coach, who was in Detroit on a recruiting trip just last week, appears to be more than happy to stay in Kent. With a nice mix of veteran transfers added to a strong returning cast, the Flashes could field one of the most talented teams in Christian's six years as head coach next season.

While Christian's name has been mentioned in the media in connection with a few other coaching vacancies this month, Kennedy confirmed Monday that Utah is the only school to have asked for permission to speak with the KSU coach.

My source for the trip to Utah was not Ray, but Ray is right far more often than most. Not envious at all. I am a fan of every school in the MAC and wish that all the MAC schools could retain their top coaches and continue to build.

Posted it here because I just don't have the time at the present to write an article at MAC Report Online.

Don't read more into what I am posting Flash Fan. I have no desire to see ANY school in the MAC have anything short of success in their athletic programs.

I'll take you on your word, Dave. Just keep in mind it may be difficult to take this one sentence post as good wishes:

Quote:With JC flying out to Utah this week and Oppenheimer being mentioned now for the UMKC post, looks like Kent may have to do some scrambling in the coaching department.

As KFlasher stated, we'll have a good coach no matter what happens.

I think JC is a smart guy. If he decides to go to Utah then, God bless him, it's probably the right choice. I just don't want to see him make a mistake and jump at $$$ signs and move into the wrong position/school (see Gary Waters, Rutgers). The program that two out of our last three head coaches have built will sustain another head coaching change. I don't want to see it happen (great recruiting class and all) but I certainly will accept it.

I think we'd all understand a move by J.C. He coaches in a conference ranked 14 last year, I believe up a spot from 15 in 2006. Ffity percent of its teams have an RPI below 200. Everyone understands a few bad teams, but half of the conference? ( A a benchmark of bad, YSU was ranked 172).
He has to listen to another year of hand wringing about how to get multiple bids.

And, if he leaves, the program is in great shape. It's much easier to attract a quality coach with the roster we have and ask them to buid upon success vs. engineer a turn around.

Having said all that, I don't think he's going to Utah. But if he does, God's speed.

While I agree that our program is in great shape, I just have a sour taste about how coaches can't stay loyal to a team when they are making 250k. I mean, they can easily affoard a home in Hudson, send kids to private schools, a Mercedes, a latte a Starbucks every morning, etc. It just burns me that they have a lot of money and security, but are looking for something more. When they are clearly happy where he is at! Yes, he can make more money at the next level, but is it worth relocating? I'm looking at relocating in 2 years because I can't work in a school district that won't rif me before I retire. And I'm not even trying to make a
3-didget salary. Maybe some of you can understand where these guys come from, but I just don't!

My concern is 75% of our great recruiting class will only be around two years. A year of getting used to a new coach could cost us a chance to have a really good team. After that year Scott and Q leave. It would be a shame to lose a good year to this. Never know how these things will turn out (if Waters doesn't leave we don't recruit Antonio Gates and the elite 8 probably never happens) but I would prefer JC stays another 2 years.
