Who is next up in baseball for you guys? I see you have had a rough start but your program is too good for it to stay that way? Who have you played so far?

FIU has put up some runs, but our pitching and defense haven't been great. I'm hoping our new guys settle down and a couple of guys come back from injury strong so that FIU can get some wins. So far we've played FAMU and UCF at home and away at Hawaii. This weekend the baseball team plays @ FAMU for a three game series and then we return home on Thursday for a game against the #3 ranked Miami Hurricanes, we play them 3 times this season, once @ FIU, @ UM and at a neutral site.

Well FIU completes the sweep with a 6-3 win at FAMU. This is what FIU needs now with 2 straight games against the Canes coming up.

Panthers tie game in 6th, take lead in 7th to sweep three-game baseball series

Feb. 22, 2004

Final Stats

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Yahmed Yema's sacrfice fly to right in the seventh inning, plated Cody Jacobs to spark Florida International to an eventual 6-3 victory over Florida A&M Sunday, completing a three-game sweep of the Rattlers at Moore-Kittles Field.

FIU (4-7) has won four straight games from Florida A&M (5-10), which took the first two games of a three-game set in Miami, earlier in the month. The Rattlers have lost their last four games.

The Panthers and Rattlers each had seven hits on the day. Catcher Cody Jacobs led the Panthers with two hits, while for FAMU, Chris Lee, Jamil Johnson and Stanley Gnat each had two hits.

Danny Hernandez (1-0) got the win for FIU in relief of starter Andrew Edwards, who went four innings, striking out six, scattering four hits and allowing all three FAMU runs. Hernandez fanned seven FAMU hitters in three and a third innings of work, allowing three hits, walking three. Leo Calderon came on the eighth to pitch one and a third innings of no-hit ball, striking out one.

Reliever Gabriel Nunez (0-1) was credited with the loss for FAMU, giving up the three runs in the sixth and seventh that broke a 3-3 game. Nunez and starter Jim Beauford both worked four innings with two strikeouts and three hits allowed apiece.

FIU grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second when Mario Suarez led off with a double, scoring on Cody Jacobs' single to center, Jacobs advanced on the throw home attempting to retire Suarez, advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Eric Otero's grounder to second.

Florida A&M made it a 2-1 game in the bottom of the inning on Stanley Gnat's solo homer to left field. The Rattlers tied the game 2-2 in the fourth, when Todd Rodman scored on a balk charged to FIU starter Andrew Edwards.

The Rattlers enjoyed a brief 3-2 lead in the fifth, when Kevin Clethan led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error, scoring on Chris Lee's single to right.

However, the Panthers would tie the game in the sixth when pinch hitter Yahmed Yema hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Cody Jacobs for a 3-3 game.

In the seventh, Dennis Diaz walked, stole second and third, scoring on a throwing error by FAMU second baseman Nick Parker for a 4-3 FIU lead.

FIU got two insurance runs in the eighth for the final 6-3 count, when Yema tripled home Jeff Skellenger, who had reached on a one out single, then Yema scored on a wild pitch from Nunez.

Well...after getting swept by FAU, FIU has been on an upswing. We are now 10-14 and have won 4 in a row.

Quote:3-10 Evansville H W, 12-1

3-11 Pittsburgh N W, 7-3

3-12 Sacred Heart H W, 18-9

3-13 Temple H W, 13-12

Hope this continues with 7 games left until Sun Belt play. One of those 7 games is at UM. The series is split 1-1 this season, would be nice to go up 2-1, especially on the road.
