more questions
More questions:

1) What is the name of the building along the Kennedy Expressway that had murals painted on it for many years (you know, the one that backed up traffic when Rodman was painted on it)?

2) What was the name of the church that was saved from destruction in the 1950's when the Kennedy was being built, and again in the early 1990's when the Kennedy was rebuilt? Who was instrumental in the saving the church both times?

3) What is the name of the fictional company in downtown Chicago that Hawkeye ordered ribs from Korea on the M*A*S*H television show? And what side dish did he forget to order?

16) What traffic flows use the upper deck of Wacker Drive, and which use the lower? South up top, North below.

17) How many Louis Sullivan buildings were lost to fire this past year? 5

18) What is the busiest stretch of road in Illinois? Eisenhower

22) What zipcode (or general area) was named by Forbes as being the hottest in the country? Naperville's

26) Why did Chicago recieve the 312 area code? because 213 LA and 212 NY were taken.

#9 is wrong, there are maybe 2 acceptable answers, but not goose island. i was thinking of the map room. hopleaf is another big one.
http://www.maproom.com/
http://www.hopleaf.com/
hopleaf actually has more beers on tap, i think around 40. you get a "menu" for both of them when you go in, describing each type of beer.

#16- the top deck is used for local traffic, the lower is designated for through traffic and trucks/deliveries.

#17- there were actually 3 i believe

#18- nope, its the dan ryan/kennedy

#22- nope, its 60602, the area around milleium park. the median sale price is around $750,000. the amont of luxury condo skyscrapers going up in that area is mind-boggling. the loop was never seen as a place to live before, this is something relatively new.

#26- with the rotary dialing technology available at the time, care was given to keep the number of "clicks" to a minimum for large cities, hence Chicago being assigned a code with only six clicks. chicago was larger than LA at the time, therefore it got 312 and LA got 313. NY had the fewest amount of "clicks"

facinating

Name the first fire-proof building built after the Chicago Fire. Hint: it's undergoing renovations. Hint II: I used to work in the building when it hosted a certain museum.

Even though I've seen this quiz a few times in the past couple years, this is a wonderful thread. It is helping me re-live so many wonderful memories from my youth. It's great how time wears away all the bad times from our past and allows us to only remember the good. Those "good old days" weren't always good, but in our minds, those days were so sweet.

Remember Bowman milk and Budddy Bowman? Save those milk bottle caps and you get free or discounted admission to Riverview (and later Kiddieland).

Speaking of Kiddieland, who can forget...

Yip Bob is a term my brother used to use. Comes in handy for all sorts of things. If you don't know the answer, Yip Bob.

Having the "Yip Bobs" or "doof doll" were other popular phrases my brother made up. Also could be used as a derrogatory term for any undesireable person or a goof. Check out the Yip Bob over there!

BTW my brother who coined the term is in my signature picture. :shhh:

Chicago Portage. Great history and an underrated FPD site. Also, the Stevenson at that area was built on the site of the filled-in Illinois & Michigan Canal.

for the most part.

for #1 its just riverside, not north riverside.

#15- the limestone floors at the field museum actually have fossils in them, if you look closely. i learned that when i went and took some kids paleontology class there when i was 9 years old.

#19- "save the point" refers to a community effort to save promotory point (near hyde park) from getting the new breakwall. right now, theres a lot of old limestone blocks, that probably while unsafe, look pretty cool. its probably my favorite place in the entire city, a great place to just unwind and find some peace.

[Image: 800px-20060528_Promontory_Point_Northerly_View.JPG]

#27- the stars of the chicago flag represent: fort dearborn massacre, great chicago fire, worlds columbian exposition, and the century of progress exposition

im impressed you got "fairyland." my mom used to go there as a kid.

speaking of amusement parks, we've also lost "santa's village" last year. all that remains is kiddieland (which is also in danger of closing).

Re #18, as a kid, Dick "Two Ton" Baker was always a favorite of mine. I used to love him on kid's shows and tickling the ivories while belting out a silly old ditty. Take a look at Two Ton in one of his "roles":

He was my role model and a big man in more ways than one. He died in his Hazel Crest (IL) home in 1975 at the all-too-young age of 59.

R.I.P., Two Ton! :goodnight:
