Bowl Combinations and Permutations
With the new rules for bowl eligibilty, this is quite the academic exercise.

I believe the following is in effect:

1) If a bowl is aligned with a conference, they must first pick a team from that conference that has a winning record.

2) Should no team be available, they must next pick a conference team with a 6-6 record.

3) Should a team still not be available, they must pick a team with a winning record from another conference.

4) Should no teams with winning records be available, they can pick a team with a 6-6 record.

Having an at-large opening, the Poinsettia Bowl starts on line 3.

5) No league can have more than two teams in the five BCS bowls.

6) Nowhere can I find an official source that has the Big East being a backup for the Big Ten in the Motor City Bowl.

Let the ciphering begin.

what i want to know is if this statement is true or not...

the two teams who make it to the MAC Championship Game (OU and CMU) are guaranteed of going to a bowl game.

i would love for us to go to the GMAC Bowl but as long as we are assured of going somewhere, i'm ok with everything else!

can anyone verify if my statement is true or not?

Right on the MAC home website:

"For the first time in league history, the MAC has three guaranteed bowl agreements in place, including each divisional champion being guaranteed a bowl invitation"

What is interesting this week is there is new twist to the bowls.

Previous Thinking-
Championship: Ohio State vs. USC
Rose Bowl: at-large (Michigan) vs. at-large (Texas)
Fiesta Bowl: Oklahoma vs. at-large (Boise)
Orange Bowl: at-large (Rutgers) vs. Georgia Tech
Sugar Bowl: Florida vs. at-large (Notre Dame)

New Thinking-
Championship: Ohio State vs. Michigan
Rose Bowl: USC vs. at-large Arkansas
Fiesta Bowl: Texas vs. at-large (Boise)
Orange Bowl: at-large (Louisville) vs. Georgia Tech
Sugar Bowl: Florida vs. at-large (Notre Dame)

I don't think it opens up any new bowl slots for the MAC however......

MAC bowl odds at this point in the season....

CMU 100%
-Lock for the Motor City Bowl.

Ohio 100%
-Lock for the GMAC bowl.

WMU 85%
-Should make a bowl. Could be pushed out of a bowl game by NIU if they lose to Akron and the MAC for some odd reason ends up with 3 bowls.

NIU 75%
-Has a shot at Toronto Bowl or Poinsetta if it can take care of buisness against EMU

Kent State 12.5%
-Has a tough game ahead at Ball State and will only pick up a bowl bid if a 5th slot for the MAC becomes open unless NIU loses then maybe a 4th.

Matchups......

(CMU vs. Pitt) Motor City
(OU vs. Southern Miss) GMAC
(NIU vs. Cincinnati) International
(WMU vs.Utah) Poinsetta

Yeah, they did that after NIU played in the MAC Championship Game last year but then lost to Akron and didnt go bowling because Toledo got the GMAC. So you can thank NIU for choking. Although after watching both teams I think OU should win but then again NIU played like it shoulda all year vs CMU. Should be a great game, looking forward to watching it.
