I would expect nothing less from our friends from Ohio and Michigan.

What's sad is that at the UT/NIU game there were several people with Illinois gear on and Illinois sucks and don't have any kind of fanbase near what OSU and UM have......and then to top it off a NIU fan lays smack down on Ohio and Michigan MAC schools.

What crack on it? You guys have similar problems with schools with less tradition, like Illinois, Northwestern, and Notre Dame.

OK, so Michigan and Ohio State combined have the same amount of football national championships as just Notre Dame has, but in terms of football attendance OSU and UM has bigger attendance and bigger fanbases. Also, OSU and UM have bigger known coaches like Woody and Bo. OSU and UM each bring in much more revenue on merchandise sales than Notre Dame as well. Finally, in more recent years OSU and UM have been winning more often. In the last 10 years both OSU and UM have higher winning percentages than Notre Dame does. And they both turn out more NFL talent than Notre Dame.

Dear Amstutz:

This is what happens when you put a crap product on the field (this year).
Plus, OSU is #1, and it was Tuesday night, and we were playing Balls Tate.
It was the perfect storm of embarassment. Maybe the mac should become a minor league for the Big Ten, and we could ship the 2 or 3 upperclassmen who are decent to Ann Arbor, Like the Mud Hens and the Tigers.

Sincerely,

FTS

C'mon, RF, you're killing me here. I'm not a fan of any of these schools, but to suggest that Woody and Bo are bigger names than Knute Rockne? This season is taking its toll on you. You wern't talking about revenue and bigger stadiums, current NFL players and the last ten years, you were talking about tradition. And they own the Chicago market and always will and have the greatest tradition in college football. Finally, they easily have the biggest fan base in the nation, hands down.
Please stop. I feel so dirty defending ND. Yuck.

OK, I have slept in about 2 days. Worked all day yesterday, went to a football game in the evening to watch a terrible offense score just 17 points against a terrible BSU defense, and then went back into work an hour or so later. So maybe my mind isn't functioning very well right now.

However, I can't agree that ND has a bigger fanbase. I haven't really seen any school's fans travel the way that Ohio State's do to be honest. IMO, Ohio State has the biggest fanbase in the country.

I went to UW-Madison so I'll give my unsolicited but impartial opinion here; The only people that really love Ohio State are Ohioans. Not only does ND command the Chicago market (my hometown and one of the great American sport cities) but they also have a enormous fan base in the rest of Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan, Pennsylvania and yes Ohio, and other far reaching points. Point-in-case; my brother-in-law lives in Dover, Delaware and is a huge Notre Dame fan--incidentally he's not even Catholic.

Ohio State is like Texas or UCLA sure they have a lot of rabid fans that'll spend money to travel. But, it's not even close to ND on the national scale.

We may have a few morons that wear ILLinois, NU or Notre Dump stuff to our games, but it is few and far between as compared to Ohio schools. I went to Akrons homecoming game last year against Army, and literally half their fans were wearing OSU colors. It made me sick.

Michigan and OSU each have a larger fan base than Notre Dame, R U on crack? That must be why Notre Dame has their own TV deal with NBC and national package on ABC radio outlets. Neither big 10 program has national radio or TV broadcast exposure. Nationally neither of the big 10 programs can compare with Notre Dame's fanbase. :owned:

BTW Michigan's fanbase is large enough in Chicago that a local AM station broadcasts all their games. I'll bet Michigan's fanbase in Ohio is smal in comparison.

Plus we have Wisconsin (#13 attendance) only 100 miles from DeKalb with their games broadcast on a Milwaukee AM station(WTMJ) which can be heard all throughout Northern Illinois. Add to that Iowa (#21 attendance) only 160 miles from DeKalb, Iowa dominates the western Illinois sports media and Purdue (#26 attendance) 180 miles from DeKalb with a very active Purdue Club in Chicago metro.

I haven't gotten to our two Big Ten instate rivals plus the #7 (Illinois State) #8 (Southern Illinois) and #24 (Eastern Illinois) ranked teams in 1AA football. Western Ilinois which isn't ranked currently was #28 attendance last year, equaling or surpassing the total attendance for Ball St, Buffalo, Akron, Kent, EMU or Temple.

That's an uphill battle.

Ohio State and Michigan are in the Big Ten and are under the Big Ten's television contract so they cannot have their own national television contract like Notre Dame has. If ND went to the Big Ten it would be the same for them, which is one reason that they will never go to the Big Ten as long as they have the NCB deal. So much for the owning.

Michigan and Ohio State games are aired on the radio in Toledo. It's annoying.

Ohio State has fans where you wouldn't even guess. Posters from the UT board that live in Florida have noted OSU gear down there this week. The following is from someone on another board that lives in Houston, Texas:

[code:1]Last night Amy and I went to a pub crawl sponsored by our favorite local brewery, and I could not believe how much scUM and OSU crap people were wearing. No to mention hearing people yelling, "Go BLEW!" with a Texas twang. Strange.[/code:1]

OSU and Michigan have more national fans than anyone here seems to think.

There are a huge amount of fans who jump on any bandwagon and that's what Ohio St is getting now, just like there used to be a lot of Miami(FL) and Fl. St stuff around the midwest 10 years ago. They stay with a team as long as it's #1.
