The game ended in a tie 14-14 on a missed fieldgoal at the last second. I only caught the second half, but Babb looked good. He was throwing the deep ball well and kemmie lewis bobbled 1 deep ball and caught the other. I was also impressed with our RBs on both teams and Justin Venable.

Jordan Jackson had only 1 catch that I saw but really was the only ball thrown his way that was catchable. Ross Rix (white team) looked very good running the ball. Both Lindon and Rix ran well and I think that can be attributed to the O-line (Cox, Fane, Cutler, Ernest, Newman). Lindon scored a TD on a short run for the white team. Bruce Taylor had a least three catches for the white team none for real big yardage but he caught everything thrown to him. Jackson, Brown (red team) and Briggs (white team) had 1 catch a piece but all were for very big yards (no drops by any of these three). Babb and Levier (both red team) both looked better in the second half. Levier scored on a very nice TD run. Babb was picked off by Felders in the first half. CC Brown played great as usual. Luke looked good at times and not so good at times. He did lead the white offense on 2 scoring drives. Kemmie Lewis had one great catch but 2 or 3 drops. Cones scored for the red team on a nice catch out of the backfield. Venable looked good catching and blocking but was not as succesfull running the ball.

Players I thought had a great game:

CC Brown SS, Johnny Felders SS, Terryl Fenton CB, Ross Rix HB, Bruce Taylor WR

Players I thought had above average games:

Jordan Jackson WR, Eddie Brown WR, Tommy Briggs TE, Travis Cones FB, Justin Venable FB, Abdule Levier HB, Dwight Lindon HB, Jesse Newman RT, Tony Hills DE, Jemarcus Smith CB

Players I thought had an off day:

Kemmier Lewis WR, Mike Mayeux P, Josh Harrison HB

My takes on the game today.

Quarterbacks:

Babb looked really off in the 1st half. In the second half, his line was able to provide more time and he was able to get into his rhythm for a second half comeback. Luke S. (I won't attempt his last name) can really fire the ball. After watching just the first half, I really thought Jerry would need to have a great summer to keep his starting job. But after watching the second half, I believe Jerry will start against NSU. Did Luke even play any of the 2nd half? I saw Matt Lane a lot at QB for the White team.

Rest of offense:

The White team had a GREAT game running the ball. Venable had a few big runs and looked really comfortable in the backfield. I was really impressed with the running of Dwigh Lindon. He was explosive and found the whole everytime created by the O-linemen. The Red team kinda had a down day running the ball. I felt they were trying to get Jerry to pass too much. Abdule Levier had a few carries, but not much. Travis didn't look great, but will be good coming August. Josh Harrison was off today, but once again will be ready come August. I don't think I've ever been this confident in our running game.

The linemen for both teams looked great. O-line for the White team created some huge holes for Venable, Lindon, and others. D-line for the White team stopped the Red for the first half, but looked like they slacked off in the 2nd half. Also, Big Canadian is BIG!! Also, the center for the White team had trouble in the shotgun. Don't remember who is was, maybe Cutler? Someone correct me.

O-line for the Red team had some trouble getting holes open the 1st half and trying to protect Jerry. Mike Moore is a MONSTER!!! He was plugging all the holes in the White's O-line. It was great to see (and a little akward) Chad Bordelon on the D-line. I've been watching him play O-line for about the past 7 years.

Kemmie Lewis had a few drops, but made up for it by catching a long pass from Babb that set up the Red's first TD of the game. B.J. Crist had a nice TD reception from Luke S in the 1st half. I'm real excited about watching this group of receivers this year. We are loaded and can be scary throwing the ball.

Defense:

Defenses looked amazing today. They were really disrupting the offenses for both teams. Lots of good plays on the defensive side of the ball. I liked the new 4-3 look. Something about it that I just love. Should be a great year for our defense. Not much else I can say other than I love the new defensive look.

Special teams:

How about that David Schenayder? He looked real good punting the ball. Comiskey missed his only FG attempt (46 yards with 5 seconds left). Newcomer Michael Mayeaux had some trouble and had some end over end punts. Since there were no kickoffs, kinda tough to talk about that. Other than that, I see Comiskey has our Kicker and now its a toss up between Schexnayder and Mayeaux for punter.

It felt great to be out at The Swamp. I needed my "fix" to last me over the summer. Had a great time visiting with Chad Bordelon's parents. Too bad the game ended like the 2002 MLB All-Star game, in a 14-14 tie! It was a really great game. It should be a great season for UL Ragin Cajuns and hope everyone makes it out to all home games.

GEAUX CAJUNS!!!

Red/White Game ends in 14-14 Push

Saturday, Apr. 3, 2004

View Box Score

LAFAYETTE - Spring football came to a close for Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns on Saturday afternoon with the Annual Red/White Spring Game. Weather conditions were perfect, as temperatures sat in the mid-70’s with plenty of sunshine.

The game had plenty of excitement throughout, but ended in an uneventful 14-14 draw. Sean Comiskey had a chance to win the game for White with an uncontested 46-yard field goal, but the blast carried wide left with one second remaining in the game.

White built a 14-0 halftime lead, only to see Red storm back with 14 second half points to tie the game.

B.J. Crist opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 24-yard touchdown pass from Luke Sniewski.

After each team traded a series, White’s Ross Rix ran four straight times for 38 yards, before fullback Justin Venable gained 11 more yards. Following five straight runs, Sniewski went to the air and found Crist open in the middle of the end zone for the score.

Dwight Lindon’s four-yard touchdown plunge with 42 seconds remaining in the first half gave White a two-score edge at the break. Lindon ran three times on the drive for 17 yards and caught an 11-yard pass from Sniewski.

Jerry Babb led the Red comeback. Babb went 3-for-3 passing for 24 yards and added a four-yard rush to help Red’s third quarter scoring drive. A 15-yard personal foul-face mask aided the drive, which ended with a six-yard touchdown toss from Babb to fullback Travis Cones.

Abdule Levier tied the game with 3:57 remaining on a 10-yard touchdown run. The freshman’s TD run preceded five straight pass attempts by Babb.

Babb opened the drive with a 51-yard strike to Kemmie Lewis. Facing fourth-and-six, Babb’s pass landed incomplete, but White was called for pass interference, spotting the ball on the White 10. Levier converted on the next play and Ben Roberts’ extra point made it a 14-14 game.

Matt Lane directed White on a 10-play, 42-yard drive before giving way to Comiskey with 5.4 seconds remaining. Lane completed a 14-yard pass to Venable and a 10-yard pass to Crist. Lindon added four rushes for 20 yards.

Comiskey, a First Team All-Sun Belt selection last season, had more than enough distance, but missed well left. The ball turned over to Red with 0.6 seconds on the clock.

Babb completed a pass to Lewis, but Lewis was tackled by a slew of White defenders on the 40-yard line.

Rix led all players with 64 yards rushing on 11 carries. Lindon added 43 rushing yards on 11 carries.

Babb led the quarterbacks with 143 yards on 10-of-20 passing. He was victimized by an interception.

Cajuns fullbacks led each team in receptions. Venable led White with three grabs for 31 yards. Cones led Red with four catches for 17 yards. Lewis had a game-high 91 yards receiving on three receptions.

Senior linebacker Stanley Smith led all players with seven tackles. Eugene Kwarteng had four solo tackles and one of three Cajuns sacks. Johnny Felders had two tackles and the lone interception.

Louisiana football enjoys a summer hiatus, before opening fall camp in August. Head coach Rickey Bustle’s squad begins the 2004 season at home against Northwestern State on Sept. 4 at Cajun Field.

Tickets to Ragin’ Cajuns athletics are available at the Cajundome Box Office or by calling Ticketmaster at 337-262-8686. Football season ticket information can be obtained by calling the Cajundome at 337-265-2100.

I was just happy to be out there watching football. I noticed that the white defense had a pretty good 1st half. I think the red offense came alive in the 2nd half. I like the running of Lindon and Harrison. I think Levier will come along this year, but is still a little behind those 2. I like Venible at the FB, he just looks like he belongs there. Rix had a couple of good runs, I think the secondary had a good game on both sides. Jerry made a couple of plays with his feet, which helped the red offense when they couldn't get anything going. I liked the throw Luke made to (I think Crist) for the touchdown.
