Football Notes
Toledo Mayor Carty Finkbeiner was at the Glass Bowl today to help promote the football game this Friday against Kansas. So was Fire Chief Mike Bell. I talked to Mr. Bell for a few minutes. He was at UT when Coach Amstutz and Mike Alston's father played for the Rockets. He's a nice guy to talk to and knows his Rocket football.
Mayor Finkbeiner encouraged the people of Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan to come to the Glass Bowl this Friday night. He wants the city to put on a show. He has asked downtown businesses to leave their lights on Friday night to "Light Up!" the city. He also said it looks like the Mud Hens will be hosting a playoff game this Friday night so the Stadium will be well lit.
Coach Amstutz told me that Nick Moore is practicing, but it is not yet known if he will play this Friday. They want to make sure he is fully recovered and not rush him back. I've heard rumors that he is going to play, but I respect the decision by Stutz to wait and make sure he is fully recovered. That really is what is in Nick's best interest.
Depite the Mud Hens most likely playing at home Friday night, the concensus is that their attendance will be hurt instead of UT's because Kansas is big-name opponent and the game is on ESPN2.
Coach Amstutz encouraged people to get out to the Glass Bowl and make their signs for ESPN2. He said we are going to put on a show. He said there will be fireworks during the game (boy I sure hope they are Rocket fireworks) and at halftime.
QB legend Chuck Ealey will be at the Glass Bowl Friday night. The University and the City of Toledo will be honoring Chuck and the famed 35 game winning streak. This is the 35th anniversary of the 3rd and final year of that winning streak.
I asked Coach Amstutz about Barry Church again, and he said "that's what an NFL player plays like."
I posted on my site, but hadn't yet here, about UT's first public commitment. DE/LB Marlin Parker from Warren Harding HS in Warren, OH. He had offers from Toledo, Boston College, Cincinnati, Indiana, Eastern Michigan, and Akron. He is 6-2, 232 pounds, and runs a 4.62 forty. Toledo has three verbals that I know of right now, all from the state of Ohio, but Parker is the only one that has gone public.
