GAME ONE

No. 7 Louisiana, playing shorthanded with two starters out with injuries, was shut out for just the fourth time this season as Sarah Pauly pitched visiting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to a 3-0 win over the Ragin' Cajuns in the first game of a doubleheader here Wednesday afternoon at Ragin’ Cajuns Softball Park.

Pauly struck out 10 and held the Cajuns to two hits through the first six innings as the Islanders (33-19) snapped UL's 13-game win streak. Texas A&M-C.C. extended its own win streak to 11 games with the upset victory.

Rachel Kitchens slapped a single up the middle with the Cajuns infield shifted to the left for the game-winning hit in the top of the fourth inning. Kitchens’ hit came with two outs and scored Katie Evans who led off the inning being hit by a pitch from Heather Bobbitt.

Megan Hansen delivered the insurance for the Islanders in the fifth when she laced a two-RBI double down the left field line to give TAMUCC a 3-0 lead. Back-to-back one-out singles from Erica Armenta and Christy Cortez set the stage for Hansen’s at bat.

The seventh-ranked Cajuns (41-5) threatened in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases for power-hitter Holly Tankersley with two outs. Pauly escaped the jam by striking her out for the final out of the game.

Heather Bobbitt (4-2) struck out five Islander hitters, but absorbed the loss for the Cajuns.

Hillary Guidry and Lacey Bertucci led Louisiana with two hits apiece. Bertucci extended her hitting streak to five games and started the Cajuns rally in the seventh with a single through the left side.

Hansen led the Islanders at the plate going 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Louisiana played the contest without the services of junior ace pitcher Brooke Mitchell and starting shortstop Tiffany Hebert, both of whom were injured in Sunday's first game against FIU.

GAME TWO

LAFAYETTE – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi scored two unearned runs in the sixth inning, spoiling a stellar pitching performance from Louisiana's Holly Tankersley, to post a 2-1 win in the nightcap of the two team’s doubleheader here Wednesday evening at Ragin’ Cajuns Softball Park.

Tankersley, making her first start in the pitching circle since Feb. 29, struck out six and gave up just two hits over seven innings. The true freshman from Kirbyville, Texas, who is also the team’s leader in home runs, held the Islanders to just two infield singles.

However, two fielding errors in the infield in the sixth inning by the seventh-ranked Ragin’ Cajuns (41-6) led to two runs for the opportunistic Islanders and made the difference in the contest.

With the win, Texas A&M-C.C. (34-19) extended its win streak to 12 games and completed the twinbill sweep of the hosts. No. 7 Louisiana suffers its first losing streak of the season.

Earlier in the day, the Islanders used a 10-strikeout performance by Sarah Pauly to snap the Cajuns 13-game winning streak in a 3-0 win.

After a scoreless first, the Cajuns were able to break through on Pauly in the second inning.

Ashley Evans, who ended the game 2-for-3, led off the inning with a single through the left side of the infield. The West Monroe native then stole second to place herself in scoring position.

Two batters later, freshman Lacey Bertucci ripped a one-out double over the drawn in outfield that rolled to the center field wall. Evans raced around for the score that put Louisiana on top 1-0.

The double, Bertucci’s eighth of the season, extending her season-high hitting streak to six games.

Tankersley continued to cruise through the Islanders batting order. After allowing an infield single to Brenda Guerrero in the third, the freshman retired the side in the fourth and fifth innings.

The decisive sixth inning began when Michelle Petree laid down a bunt single for a leadoff hit. Tankersley then issued a walk to leadoff hitter Erica Armenta which was followed by a fielding error by Christine Collins at shortstop that allowed Christy Cortez to reach first and load the bases with no outs.

After back-to-back groundouts to Danyele Gomez at third base which resulted in her firing the ball to catcher Joy Webre for two outs, Tankersley and the Cajuns defense appeared to work its way out of the jam.

However, Jennifer Golden hit a grounder to second base that was misplayed which allowed the two runs to score and give Texas A&M-C.C. a 2-1 lead.

Pauly retired the Cajuns in order in the sixth and seventh innings allowing the Islanders to escape with an improbable sweep.

Louisiana was playing the game without junior ace hurler Brooke Mitchell and junior shortstop Tiffany Hebert, both regular starters who were injured in last Sunday’s first game against Florida International.

The Ragin’ Cajuns will be back in action Saturday-Sunday, April 24-25 as the squad travels to Denton, Texas, for a four-game Sun Belt series against North Texas. Doubleheaders on both days begin at 1 p.m.

Whether or not the Cajuns have Mitchell and Hebert back in the lineup will be determined by re-evaluations of the two on Thursday. Both are listed as day-to-day.
