Surprised such a strong academic school like Miami University didn't make the list.

They don't emphasize research, they are primarily an undergrad university. I'm surprised UAB is so high, and Tulane and Rice low. 04-jawdrop

UAB is renowned for its medical research. According to en.wikipedia.org, "UAB received over $390 million in federal grants during the past fiscal year for research purposes. This places the school as one of the larger research institutions in the Southeast. In fact, UAB is currently 3rd in the Southeast for NIH research funding behind only Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. "

If I'm not mistaken, most of KC's intent in positing such stuff is to find listings where OU comes out ahead of Miami. Go 'fer it, KC!

Toledo comes in at #209 which is sure to change in 2007 with the merger with MCO.

NIU comes in at #255. At least that puts us in the top half (top 43%, to be more specific).

The trend is good & you will see even bigger increases in 04 - 06. NIU should be well into the top 200 by then.

The merger between the University of Toledo and the Medical College of Ohio will most certainly raise research dollars.

Research expenditures at UT were $32.6 million last year, according to school records. Joined with MUO, that figure would grow to $53 million.

Hopes high for UT-MUO research

Do you truely expect us to take this report seriously when they have Woods Hole Oceanographic college ranked 115? Any system that has OU ranked higher than MU in the area of academia has to be flawed.

Yeah right......

OU has better academics than Miami.

The only reason Miami is more selective is because its 1.Smaller, 2. Next to cincinnati and dayton, 3. A nicer campus

Yep, not much on the athletic field but UB has really ramped up their emphasis on winning federal research grants the past 5 years. Most of it is for medical, engineering & bioinformatics.

Like every other research University, UB knows that you have to be active in research in order to recruit the top faculty & students.

Damn,,,if only research $$ could translate into recruiting top football talent 03-hissyfit

Jesus, folks! It's not an "academic ranking;" it's a freakin' budget report of which institutions spend the most on research and development. As such, it's basically a proxy for which universities have the largest and most active programs in the research sciences. No more; no less.

BTW, you're obviously not very familiar with Woods Hole. That's probably the premiere place in the world to study oceanography and marine biology. IIRC, the place is limited to graduate students only, and folks in those fields would basically kill to study at Woods Hole (on Cape Cod) and list that on their resumes.

No argument from me, but you sure have been edgy lately. That vacation didn't seem to help much.

When I was younger, I didn't suffer fools gladly. As I get older and more curmudgeonly, I'm less likely to suffer them at all. ;-)

But the vacation was great.

I'm not quite sure the value in such rankings...but if there is any to be had, I don't think it's here. For an easy one, does retaining students REALLY point to a better school? I wouldn't think so, academic rigor is likely to weed students out.

I never liked this list. It's been a cash cow for USN&WR, but I don't think it's been good for academia.

I don't like these lists either. But as much as Universities may downplay it, they all want to be in the top 20%, 50%, whatever?!? They know prospective students look at this stuff. And like you said US news makes a ton of money. The only reason i saw this list today is because it was written about in the Buffalo News.
