We are also building an alumni center across the street from the football stadium with a similar function to the one recently built at NIU.
That's cool, what will it be used for? How much is it going to cost?
I'll just give you the article on it........
OU hopes to build alumni center near tailgating area
Ohio University officials are making preliminary plans for a new alumni center that would be located next to the Hocking River near the football tailgating area off of Richland Avenue. The facility likely wouldn't open until 2011.
Leonard Raley, vice president for university advancement, said Tuesday that OU officials are still putting together details concerning the size and location of the building. Raley said that the planners do not want to take away from the tailgating area, but they are also sensitive about the trees that are planted on the grounds.
"It would be positioned in a way that would enhance the 'Tailgreat Park' area and not take away from it," Raley said.
The facility may be a two-story building, but Raley said that has not been determined yet.
"The building will be used in a lot of ways," Raley predicted. "It would be first and foremost a home for our graduates to return to and feel that they have a facility in which they can host any of their alumni reunions and special events."
He also envisions the new alumni center as a place for visitors to come to when they first arrive at OU so that they can receive a quick orientation to the campus and then be directed to where they need to go.
"A lot of universities have built these and found that it has really changed the character of the institution," Raley said.
Faculty members could also use the facility to hold meetings with outside groups, Raley said.
"Faculty are going to find out that a facility like this is going to be magnificent for them," Raley said. "We would hope that we would also have the opportunity for the community to use the facility."
The university's current alumni center is Konneker Alumni Center on University Terrace.
"It's a charming, historic home," Raley said, adding, however, that the building has a limited amount of space. The university can hold meetings for small groups in the building, but has to hold larger meetings elsewhere on campus, which competes with classroom space and Baker Center space, Raley said.
"The Alumni Association Board of Directors has talked about this for a long time," Raley said. Most other major universities with comparable numbers of alumni have facilities like the one OU hopes to build, he added.
"This will also add to the march toward national prominence that President (Roderick) McDavis speaks of," Raley said. The idea is that because alumni will have a center that they can call their own, that they know they can go to when they come to campus, it will encourage more alumni to visit the university, Raley said. When more alumni visit and become active with the university, it's easer to get the alumni involved in campus activities and have them serve on boards and committees, he added.
"When you have more alumni involved, it leads to great things," Raley said.
THE ALUMNI CENTER WILL BE paid for with private funds, and the university is trying to raise $22.5 million to pay for the facility, Raley said. The goal is to raise $17 million for construction and $5.5 million for a planned operating and maintenance endowment so that all of the costs of building and maintaining the facility would be paid for with private money, he said.
The university will not break ground for the new building until it has raised enough money to start the project.
Former OU President Robert Glidden is leading the fundraising campaign for the new alumni center. Raley said Glidden is in the early stages of the fundraising and has been making visits to try to raise money for the center. Glidden is being paid $250,000 over the next three years to serve the university in several ways, including leading the fundraising effort for the alumni center.
McDavis has set a timeline to have the groundbreaking for the alumni center take place in 2009 and dedication of the facility take place at the homecoming festivities in 2011, Raley said.
"That is all dependent on making sure we have the revenue stream in place," he said.
OU officials considered other sites around campus, but decided the Richland Avenue location was best, partially because it is located near the main entrance to the university, according to Raley.
"It would send a strong signal to alumni as we welcome them back," he said. The facility would also be close to the athletic fields, and OU will involve the Green and White Club athletic boosters in planning the facility, Raley said.
