The UALR volleyball team has announced its 2004 schedule, which is highlighted by a tough non-conference schedule in which the Trojans will face off with teams from the Big 10, SEC and Conference USA.
The Trojans will participate in three tournaments starting with the Arkansas State Classic on Sept. 3-4 where they will play four matches. The Trojans will then head to the extremely competitive Texas-Arlington Invitational Sept. 10-11 where they will play four teams including Alabama and Indiana. The Trojans will finish their non-conference portion with the TCU Adidas Invitational Sept. 17-18 where they will square off with the host TCU and the preseason 19th ranked squad from Santa Clara, along with Appalachian State.
The Trojans begin conference play by hosting Florida International on Sept. 25 in the Trojan Fieldhouse. The Trojans will face a huge test as in-state rival Arkansas State and the reigning Sun Belt Champions New Mexico State come to Little Rock on Oct. 8 and Oct. 10 respectively.
The 2004 Sun Belt Tournament will be played Nov. 18-20 in New Orleans La. at Lakefront Arena for a chance to move on to the NCAA tournament.
"We have a very challenging schedule this year," head coach Van Compton said. "We are playing some very tough non-conference matches and the conference schedule is always tough. We are always looking for the opportunity to play those top-25 type teams, so the Santa Clara match will be very exciting."
The Trojans will look to improve on a successful 2003 campaign that saw the Trojans win 19 games and advance to the Sun Belt Tournament Semi-Finals despite having only eight players on the roster.
Head coach Van Compton led UALR to a 19-11 overall record and a second place finish in the Sun Belt East Division with a 9-5 conference record. This marked the eleventh consecutive season the Trojans have recorded a winning record in league play.
2004 will be the final season UALR will call the Trojan Fieldhouse home. The Trojan volleyball program will move into a new $25 million on-campus special events center next season.
