Coach Gary Waters will not allow his team to give the Flashes open looks to the basket and every shot Kent takes against Rutgers will be contested unlike last night against Austin Peay. In the Clarksville newspaper, The Leaf Chronicle, Austin Peay's coach discusses his team's poor play on both offense and defense and especially points out how many open shots the Flashes were given by the Governers.

From The Leaf Chronicle.

While Austin Peay head coach Dave Loos gave credit to the Golden Flashes for shooting well, he was very disappointed with his team's defensive effort.

"I think we did a poor job of getting out and contesting," Loos said. "They had some really open looks and made them.

"You have to give them credit for making those shots, but most of them were open shots," Loos added. "We just really didn't fight out to the shooters."

Considering that Armon Gates couldn't BUY a three pointer during the second half of last season, guarded or unguarded, I'm certainly encouraged by his shooting thus far.

Coaches always say after a loss, "yeah, they played well, BUT we made it easy for them because we stunk." It's easier than admitting that the other team simply has more talent. I don't put much stock in anything any coach says about his team's performance. Coaches are experts at "spinning".

Rutgers beat KSU 55-52. KSU's largest deficit was 12 at halftime. Nate Gerwig had a good second half. He scored all of his points, 10 or 12. He had the ball in the paint down one with 30 seconds left, but he couldn't muscle it in through a double team. Warz did not make his first outside shot until less than two minutes remained. Gates did not really have open looks. Youngblood did very little. Scott played a good defensive game, and Knight played well in the first half. But he didn't play much in the second half because of Gerwig's good half. Same problems as last year as I see them. No go-to scorer when everybody knows you need a basket. You can't miss foul shots when you trail in the second half.

But the defense was very good all day.

It was an ugly game for both teams. I didn't agree with a couple of nate's shots near the end of the game. he was taking what looked like crazy hook shots. I think he should have shot straight on. He was pretty good in the second half. Scott looked good in this game. I love his athleticism. I wanted youngblood to be more involved.. If we had made a couple less mistakes and made a few more free throws, this game would have been ours.
