Teams of MTSU's athletic ilk usually don't take kindly to being dubbed a mid-major.
Sometimes they prefer other terms like non-BCS. That being said, perhaps the top of the mid-major food chain is the Mid-American Conference.
The MAC has gained national exposure over the past few years with high NFL draft picks and landmark wins over national powers.
Akron, a member of the MAC, hasn't enjoyed any major victories over any BCS big boys recently, but it has found success within its well-respected conference.
The Zips have posted winning records in the MAC in three of the last five seasons, including a 7-5 (5-3 in conference) mark in 2003.
The newfound respect for the MAC hovers over any team that carries the conference's flag. The Blue Raiders, meanwhile, would love to steal some of that spotlight away.
