Hey there Golden Flashes. We've got a group of 7 coming up in a couple vehicles to the game this weekend. Are there multiple tailgating areas at Kent St? Can you suggest a place, preferably a friendly one, for us, the self-proclaimed "Huskie Road Crew" to throw back some beers and meet some cool new people? 04-drinky

Thanks!

You'll get the door prize for the biggest crowd! 04-bow

I'd suggest the parking lot near the Field house as the best place for tailgating. Bear in mind "best" is relative for Kent State. We have a Nazi police department (and not much of an exaggeration) who must be paid a bounty for every open container they confiscate because the City of Kent cannot come up with any more imaginative ways to raise funds than to harass students and visitors. Next to the team's performance, they have done more to kill game day atmosphere more than anything else. And the more people they chase away, the fewer there are to patrol.

Consider yourself warned.

Whoa, I just read that there's no alcohol at tailgating? Is that true? I've never heard anything like that, at any game, EVER!! At NIU and any game I've ever been to you can drink until the cows come home. Please tell me I'm wrong, and is beer available at the stadium?

Yes, beer is available ( Miller?) in the stadium until half time.

Don't get us started on the tailgating situation. 03-puke

For some grub before or after the game hit Taco Tonto's right in downtown near the bars. Excellent Beef Burritos. Hit Ray's Place (solid college bar) next door and if you stay late enough gyro Bob has a portable gyro stand outside. Ignore the workers, who usually appear to be high, the gyro is the best around.

Not exactly sure how you will be received. There were a few Miami fans in Ray's for Homecoming, and they were fine. I saw no one harrassing them. Usually, most people are cool, but you can get @-holes who are drunk and like to talk. Overall, at least before the game, I think you would be fine..

Everyone knows your name at Ray's. Huskies will be fine. Plus, for some reason, Kent State fans don't talk alot of football smack. :D

The average student would guess that NIU is likely somewhere in northern Illinois, Indiana, or Iowa, but probably doesn't know there is a football game Saturday and if he did know, probably wouldn't know who we played anyway. Football is not a big issue on campus, let alone downtown in the bars.

Look forward to going to the game and meeting some new kent state friends!

We were at the akron game and made a couple friends so we will be going to the akron-army game after the niu-kent game.

I'll be enjoying much "pepsi" and other "soda" types before the game, trust me!

Wow, this blue and gold theme to the page is hurting my eyes...

I am part of the previously mentioned road crew, and will be doing my fair share of having fun before and during the game (I thought you couldn't sell beer in NCAA stadiums! 04-drinky ).

Anyone from this board care to meet up with some of us at the NIU board?

That's how Basketball is at NIU. I once saw a guy in a Bowling Green shirt at a bar in the middle of the week and could not for the life of me figure out what he was doing there. Why was he visiting friends out of state during the week? Then it occurred to me that there had been a basketball game earlier that evening. I wasn't used to seeing visiting fans for basketball games. You usually can't even tell there is a game going on at all

I'd venture to say the average student at Kent State knows when we have basketball games. In fairness, while not the "typical" student supports yet, the football program has received more support than historically. Of course, heaven is a low base!

I believe it can be sold in the stadium, as long as it is located off of campus..

That is correct. UCF, Kent, Akron to list a few.

But to not allow alcohol at tailgating! 03-banghead

Off campus has nothing to do with it. Alcohol is sold on campus at the restaurants. The key is that alcohol must me sold and consumed in a "controlled area". Controlled usually means walls around or fence around for outdoor spaces. And, I think that if beverage is sold under license, it is forbiden to allow customers to provide their own beverage. Tailgating, almost everywhere, is illegal under the open container law. However, enforcement is lacking at almost all college and professional venues. When a police chief comes on the scene that takes his job seriouly in lieu of politically, tailgating will be difficult. Can you just see a university president saying to the police chief to back off enforcing the law. That president is bye bye.
