I'm sure most of the Ohioans around here saw this. I knew that was a fumble 2 weeks ago at Miami. I know, I know, "let it go already"! But, it looks like the Flashes got screwed again!!

From the Akron Beacon Journal:

quote:
Early in the second quarter, NIU wide receiver Dan Shelton caught a Jared Fritz punt at his own 10-yard line and was immediately hit by Flashes special teamer Nashville Dyer. But Shelton bounced off the tackle, somewhat miraculously, and recovered. He slipped two more tacklers and raced down the sideline for a 90-yard punt return, the longest in school history.

Kent State coach Dean Pees was furious that an apparent illegal and crucial block was made on the play as Shelton reversed his field, but it was not flagged. Pees was already sore at MAC officials after a mistaken call cost his team a vital turnover in the loss to Miami, something the conference office this week admitted was an error.

``It's (the officials') hobby, it's our profession, it's the kids' profession, it's not (the officials') game,'' said Pees, fully knowing there may be consequences for his words. ``It's not a joke.''

Did anybody here make the trip to DeKalb? Any thoughts?

I noticed you left out the part that said...
"regardless if the block was illegal or not, a few Kent players missed tackles" I read that in the paper yesterday too.
I'm not a fan of the "one play made the whole game" theory. Kent had 5 drives deep into Huskie territory and came away with 2 FG's...Cribbs was non existent. I was impressed with Kent's defense though. Tough loss for the Flashes at any rate. Good luck VS the Herd this week.
BTW, I was at the BG/Kent women's soccer game yesterday and noticed the visitor bleachers were torn down. A sign said Tops Student section coming soon...any ideas what that might be like?

Yeah, I agree with what you say about one play making a game. Though it is tough to see this team have the breaks go against them 2 weeks in a row. The alleged no-call at NIU my not have completely changed the game, but the 2 missed calls at Miami did. Those missed calls involved 9 points. So, I can see why Pees is so upset....

As far as the visitors bleachers go, I haven't heard/seen plans with any certainty. I've read somewhere about plans for "suites" atop the new stands, which would seem to require a permanent structure, as opposed to aluminum bleachers. Some folks have suggested the new(er) YSU style visitors side, which would be perfect.

You know, I see people take their shots at Dix here and there, but I think the place is awesome. Purely from a "great place to watch a game" standpoint. There's very lttle area between the stands and the playing field, always a great place to sit(we all know why), and now you can get beer inside the gates!!! For the money, you can't beat it.....

Freak, you gonna come see Leftwich this week????

I'm taking a wait an see approach on the stands. There really is no strong reason besides asthetics to build them. Attendance doesn't demand it. I sort of wonder why spend the money there? Why not actually put hot water in and improve the bathrooms a little. For crying out loud, I've got two little kids and no place to change them. From a personal standpoint, it's a pain.

Oh and from a football standpoint, this week's game could get real ugly. I hope not, but things don't look good after the last two weeks...

MacBuck,
I like going to Dix for games...the place is alot like Doyt Perry Stadium in BG...great place to see a game. Will be there NOV 2nd for Kent/BG game. Are they still not allowing people to tailgate with their own "beverages"? The last 2 times I've been there we have been told "you can buy our beer out of our kegs here but you cannot open up your own"...there were campus cops on bikes riding around watching people.

Whoa! I just read your post again...BEER inside the gates????????????? Awesome!!

Sorry I won't be able to see the Flashes vs the Herd...Gotta be at Perry Stadium for my Falcons! I have had season tix there since 1996 and yes, I drive up to BG (2 hr+ drive one way) for each home game. I usually go to 3-5 road games a yr also and love it when BG plays at Kent or Akron.

"I've got two little kids and no place to change them. From a personal standpoint, it's a pain."

Flash, with 2 boys, 6 and 3 1/2, I remember those days well! Not having a place to change the kids is the worst.

Fellas, with the visitor stands gone, what is the seating capacity of Dix now?

I share your joy for the inside sale of beer, though I probably should clarify. Yes, there is beer inside the gates, but, it's just like the tailgate that was previously outside the gates. Monitored sales using tickets you must purchase first. So, I guess you can't walk up to a concession stand and get a 32 ouncer at will. Though I wish you could. I would get to more games.....

On aonther note......
They're doing something similar this year at OSU. They closed off the St. John Arena parking lot to tailgaters, which was a great spot, right between the Varsity Club and the Stadium. Now they moved all the people who had passes to this lot to the Schott parking lot (way out on West campus). Coincidently, right in the area where the university is now sponsering their own tailgate, with beer, food, etc....

Anyway, I would imagine the old visitors side held 5,000-7,000? Just a guess though. Stadium probably now seats 23-25,000? The only issue with this being another (Enter Akron/Canton/Youngstown/Warren high school here) vs. (Enter Cleveland high school here) playoff game.

Also, Spielman just had Urban Meyer on his show last hour. Spielman was going on with "He's gone after this year" and "If he's smart he would". Urban's response was simply "Maybe, but I'm not leaving BG just to go anywhere with a big name" (not word for word). Sounded like a nice guy....now for that basketball coach of yours, well......
