In another pick the winner contest for MAC teams, I've been in the lead. Not after this week. Among this week's oopsies.

UConn 37, Ohio 19 - I acutally got to listen to the 4th quarter of this game. I was driving back from Huntington after a golf tournament and was surfing the AM band and found it. The Bobkitties collapse was reminiscent of CFU's collapse against Arizona.

BUGS 39, Kansas 16 - OK. I am now a believer.

WIU 29, NIU 26 - God I hate picking NIU. They are one of the most inconsistent teams I have ever seen. They remind me of Michigan State in that regard - look like national champs one week and national chumps the next.

Indiana 39, CMU 29 - Well, I was a believer.

Other thoughts.

I sure wish I could have watched the Miami/Kent game. Just from watching the score updates on ESPN, it looked like a great game. Buffalo continues to demonstrate why they would not be in contention for the I-AA playoffs. So does EMU. Hey Zips. Football is a 4 QUARTER GAME. Giving up after 3 pretty much ensures a score you won't be proud to repeat in polite company. Don't know whether UNLV scored some meaningless points at the end to keep the score respectable with Toledump or whether it was a reasonably close game. If the former, then they may actually give BG some competition for the MAC West. If the latter, the MAC West title is BG's to choke away if they so choose.

Our game was 24 to nothing at the half. UNLV put up some garbage points in the 4th quarter. The game was never in doubt. Next stop...Pittsburgh!

NIU is surely the most schizophrenic team out there. Beats Wake Forest in OT, loses badly to S. Florida, outplays (but barely loses to) Wisconsin, then falls at home to WIU.

The CMU score was about what I expected. The Chips are a much improved team, but they are still just shy of holding on and beating a Big Ten team on the road (even a Big Ten bottom-feeder).

Congrats to BG. I know it's really early and anything can happen, but the visualization of BG vs. MU in MACC6 just became a bit clearer.

Our QB apparently took a vicious -- but clean, I heard -- hit in the second half and was a little off the rest of the game, missing a couple possible scoring passes. Our kicker had a poor contest, missing two XPs and a FG. Better, but we're still acting like a young team, at times (which in some areas we are)...

NIU is an enigma. I just don't know how you can be that inconsistent.

CMU has certainly improved. While they may not win the West, they will give people a lot of trouble.

And I will say it again -- I'm glad BUGS is in the West (this year).

I'll tell you why - we have a bunch of key injuries and have young guys playing a lot right now.

Not playing the last two games - Hammock, Thompson, Hickenbottom (all strong 1st team all-MAC possibilities); Fleck (all-MAC possible punt returner and SR WR).

DT Falbo didn't play the second half (listed as possible 3rd team All-MAC in one publication). Turner is still trying to shake a hamstring injury (he's running fine, as evidenced by 282 yards, but his conditioning is not good because he hasn't been able to run much in practice). Our second WR, Perry, is out, which is why the true frosh Hurd caught so many balls against UW - nice surprise, but it's still a 17 year old (yes, 17) playing a lot, and now he's banged up. Our QB had a wrap on his throwing hand for the entire game Saturday. We lost a backup CB for the year, and the other backup, currently playing for Thompson, came out of Saturday's games. The one healthy all-MAC safety we do still have came off the field Saturday also.

To recap - in our games thus far we've been without the services of 4 different WRs, 5 different DBs, plus the guy on the front of our media guide. Our current RB, QB and DT are banged up. We're not just losing players, we're losing all-conference players. On Saturday, we had 2 SRs starting on O and 3 on D, so we're also very young. Ugh.

I said this on the Huskie board - everyone here pick 4 of your best players, and determine whether you'd be as good a team without them.

The best thing to do the next couple of weeks would be to pick NIU to definately participate in a football game. Beyond that, no one can make any promises about things like "defense" or "completing passes".
