In the second installment of our look at football recruiting, I'll focus on the tight end position. With the verbal commitment recently of Joe Staley, CMU will most likely not offer another TE prospect in the Class of 2003. Along with Garrett Bushong who committed to Michigan St. last fall, Staley and Josh Powell are considered the top three in-state tight end prospects.
1) Joe Staley (6-5, 215, 4.6) of Rockford - Extremely fast with great hands, he totaled more than 150 yards in receiving and scored four TDs last year for the Rams. Staley was instrumental in leading Rockford to a 9-0 regular-season and O-K Red Conference Title. He also qualified for the Div. I state finals in the 200-meter dash. Staley committed to CMU the last day of the Michigan Football Camp in June, citing CMU's system, facilities and coaches.
2) Josh Powell (6-5, 240, 4.85) of Wyondotte Roosevelt - Big and strong, but not nearly as fast as Joe Staley, Powell had 50 receptions for 630 yards and four TDs as a junior. Named all-state honorable mention last season. Known suitors include CMU, BGSU, Toledo, WMU, U-M and MSU.
