Where's Maurice Clarret?

Am I the only one impressed with Ohio St. Freshman running back?

I'm telling ya' it's a two horse race. The Tenn and Fla QB's may get some attention if Dorsey or Leftwich pull up lame, and look for a Pac 10 entry, but aside from some catastrophic event it's between Bryon and Ken.

Clarrett may get an invite to NY, especially if Grossman's team loses to UGa and Tenn.

I don't think you can rule out Simms yet. I'm certainly not one of his supporters, but if UT can run through the bigXII, which is possible, I wouldn't be surprised to see Simms make a push.
I think it is an outrage that Clarett is being discounted solely because he is a Freshman. If I had to vote right now, he'd be the frontrunner.

Clarett is running wild, for sure. But is it realistic to make him even a consideration for "the best college football player in the country" THREE GAMES into his college career??? A tad premature, imo.

Is the heisman trophy for 'career' achievement? I thought it was for the best college football player in the country..this year. Sure Clarett has only played three games this season...but so has nearly everyone else. Who has meant more to his teams success than Clarett so far this season?

I must admit I get a lil' ticked at all of the non-sense that goes into the heisman trophy. It is about the best player in the country...a player's class status or prior year achievements SHOULD have no impact on who wins the heisman this year.

It kinda functions like the polls. If you're not singled out by the so-called experts in pre-season as a top25 or heisman "favorite"...well, just forget about it. Look at BG for example. The Falcons are playing great football, but you hear nothing about them and they are not even approaching the top25..why? Because the 'experts' didn't have them their before the season started.

In both the polls and heisman debates folks need to focus much more on ON-FIELD PERFORMANCE and much less on preseason predictions, class status and prior year performances.

Go Herd!

And even though the Heisman is supposed to be about a season, we all know it is often a career award -- look at Crouch last year.

I never said he should win, but he's not even in the top 10! That's insane.

The best college player IMO is Byron Leftwich, but he won't win because he plays in the MAC. But, I don't know if I've ever seen anyone throw better than him.

Well, maybe Daunte Culpepper, but I might be a little biased.

Dodo,
That's what I was getting at in my rant...
More and more things in college football today are really not what they are "supposed" to be about...
the heisman, top25 rankings, bowl invitations, etc.
Eventually we as fans have to stand up and hold the so-called experts accountable if these things are going to maintain credibility.
Anybody that eliminates a player from the heisman race due to their class status, or eliminates a team from top25 consideration b/c the experts didn't have them on their preseason radar screen or anybody that suggests bowl invitations should be offered for any reason other than selecting the most deserving team based upon performance...loses all credibility with me and IMO are doing a disservice to college football.

I think Byron's the best QB in the country, and he may well be the best player.

I am rooting for him for Heisman, partially because he's from the MAC, and partially because he seems like a good kid. I was just certain that the moron voters would take him out of the running just because his team had a poor performance.

It's not Byron's fault that Virginia Tech has dominating lines and the Marshall receivers dropped passes that hit them between the numbers.

My best player in America right now is Clarett, because of what he did, how he did it and who he did it against. Leftwich would be my number 2 right now - he was on the money all night against VT, but didn't get any help from his WRs, and his D didn't give him a lot of chance to get back on the field.
